All things considered (his hectic radio/tv promotion schedule prior to Leno, first performance nerves, not much time to work on it, etc), the performance was alright. I think Al is talented enough that with time, he can work on the verses and be able to perform then "live" in their entirety once the Lynwood touring rolls around.
In the meantime, OR if he just can't nail those verses, I think a better performance idea would be to have Jim and Steve doing backups, however have them join in at the end of each line. NUMEROUS rap acts have had their live-act "posse" yell out the lyrics at the end of lines (and acts like the Beastie Boys do it on basically every song, heh), and not only would it sound a lot better, it could be passed off as much more legit.
I still think he could nail those verses though. He's got enough time.

I just watched it again on YouTube. (love the comment from the person who wants the same portrait Al's got in his attic-- you gotta appreciate a commenter who knows the classics!
)
My Al-Gal side found myself wishing he'd worn the pink polo shirt he wore to mow the lawn for the video... it's a bit more form-fitting (and less like the Comdex moshers in the Pentiums video)

"Weird Al" has a charisma that's all his own. The awkward, the misshapen, the socially inept flock to his banner.

I was wondering if the gray pants were the same ones from the video.Orthography Enthusiast @ Nov 7 2006, 02:26 AM wrote: My Al-Gal side found myself wishing he'd worn the pink polo shirt he wore to mow the lawn for the video... it's a bit more form-fitting (and less like the Comdex moshers in the Pentiums video)

Having seen what that looks like now, the camera angles weren't so bad. I can see a little more now that I've watched it a few times how the performance seems a little rushed and/or unrehearsed.
Ooops, I just commented in the other thread

Chamillionaire on Leno

Sounds like he used canned vocals too, particularly on the "they see me rollin" parts.

Yeah, I hear what you're talking about. It seems that either the original song or W&N is a very hard song to do live without some kind of canned vocals or backup singers. When I sing the song to myself, I'm usually too tired to sing by the third chorus, so I understand why it's done.
Let those who worship evil's might beware my power, Green Lantern's light!

Well, one major difference is that Chamillionaire is a professional rapper. That's what he's been doing all of his life. Al can rap, but it'd be foolish to say that he's up to Chamillionaire's level.TMBJon @ Nov 7 2006, 10:56 AM wrote: I didn't hear any canned vocals in Chamillionaire's performance.
I think Al should hang out with Chamill for an afternoon and get help on nailing the live performance of the song.
