I see this is a topic of discussion again. I have way more fun seeing and meeting other fans at these things than wheatever the organized thingies are that the orrganizers put together, especially the more passive stuff like performances. The getting together and putting faces, voices, and bodies to names, posts and avatars is the cool part and the reason I go.
I've been to the last 2 ALCONS and also to a few less formal get-togethers organized over the years among Al-fans. Depending on the locale and time, a lot of things could be arranged that don't necessarily require a large financial investment, particularly up front [e.g. a convention in Minnesota could center on a pilgrimage to Darwin and the beloved twineball-although I note noone's talking about a Minnesota locale.

] An Al-themed art festival or photography exhibit as part of the festival? [Art classes with Al themes?] We put together an Al pilgrimage here in LA in 2001 that went from Lynwood High School through Santa Monica and the Civic Center Auditorium, past Pico and Sepulveda, onto Capitol REcords, etc., etc. and other sites. A July get together can include a birthday party for Suzanne whether the guest of honor is there or not. There are a zillion challenges and competitions that could be done, none of which need to involve a huge outlay. Nothing says this would have to be a repeat of the three Chicago based ALCONS or of any other convention in form or in spirit.
There's my 27 cents.
