I don't understand how they could make that big sand sculpture of Al, and have it stay together and look so good like it is so far, unless they are using Moon Sand, I mean not the sand from the moon, but that stuff that they sell in the toy isle right next to the play dough

All they use is sand and water. It's a fairly rough sand, commonly used for this purpose. As you can see from the photos, they build up layers of wet sand that they tamp down and it dries fairly hard in the wood forms. Then, as they get toward the bottom of the sculpture, they remove the forms and carve into the sand. The key is the amount of water in the original mix- too much, and it will never dry in time to sculpt. Too little, and the sculpture will crumble from its own weight. The sand is held together by the surface tension of the water, so there needs to be enough to distribute between each granule.flusher5 @ July 20, 2009 08:17 am wrote: I don't understand how they could make that big sand sculpture of Al, and have it stay together and look so good like it is so far, unless they are using Moon Sand, I mean not the sand from the moon, but that stuff that they sell in the toy isle right next to the play dough
