finally got to see this. I was VERY disappointed. I knew it would be hard to pull off live, but the canned vocals sounded really out of place, Al's live vocals weren't too great, and the whole stage setup wasn't very appealing to watch.
Certainly the worst live performance of a song I've ever seen or heard Al do.

Thanks for posting the video clip. I downloaded the high resolution version and watched it. Everyone sounded good, and I heard Jim and Steve's singing. I was expecting a little something different with the overall performance. It just wasn't as polished as it could have been yet. Not bad for a first attempt though. Let the guys get a few concerts under their belt to get used to the song and figure out what works and doesn't, and I think everything will good.
Plus there was no lights and fog machines audience participation and all that other cool stuff you get in concert.

What a fun performance! Al and The Band were great!
*waves Hi to Diva* It was nice to see you and meet your new man
Yes, my niece was able to get off work to go with me. We arrived a little early, parked on the side street, then walked over to talk to one of the gate guards. He said where we parked was good and told us where to find the line for the show. So we wandered over and got in line. We were really happy with the location of our seats!!
The first three-quarters of the show was slow torture...okay, that was a slight exaggeration. But it sure was fun when they removed the curtain and Al came riding out on the Segway. I was so curious how it was going to be performed. I thought the whole song was really done well! So many funny parts
It just went by too fast and I couldn't see everything (Too bad it wasn't one of those 11 minute songs - hehe)
Afterwards we recognized a few more people
and then left to go over to an Italian restaurant I'd been wanting to try over at the Universal Studios City Walk. We ate, walked around the shops and then headed for home. It was a really nice day and we're so glad we got to be there!
Thanks to YouTube, I was able to see what the tv audience saw at home. I've been thinking about this off and on all day. I've read other comments and tried to think how it could have been different.
A contrast with Al as the "rapper", The Band "nerdy", the contrast of them doing those same moves together (like with Donny, but Steve and Jim just like they did on the Leno stage), then having Ruben riding across the stage on the segway during that part of the lyrics, etc.? I like both rapper Al and nerdy Al. But the song lyrics are in the first person. I really can't think of a way Al could have done it better than he did!
(To my untrained eye, maybe the camera angles/views weren't always used to their fullest potential to maximize the funny.)
Big big thanks to Jay Leno for having them on the show! Now it's Letterman's turn!

I'm sure that with this performance (as well at reading this forum, I'm sure) they will figure out some things they need to work out. Not to mention, the real test will be when they perform this during the tour next year.
*wonders if Al will ride a segway to open the song at every concert*
I thought the AlCan was more prominent during the second verse and Jim and Steve were more prominent in their parts during the first verse, but it could be my imagination.

If they do decide to rework the presentation of the song, my vote would be Jim and Steve as the thugs ("Gangsta Jim" is a pretty hilarious thought right there-- Steve not so much; he can look menacing!) and Al as the nerd. After all, he's gotta have somebody up there who won't go bowling with him!
The Tonight Show really doesn't offer much in the way of staging-- that stage is surprisingly small. It's pretty much, "Here's a piece of our floor. Do your best with it."
I was able to watch it on tape again tonight (my friends' taping efforts were successful) and I was impressed again with how young Al looks in the nerd getup. Maybe it's because we're used to seeing him in glasses when he was younger. And I noticed he wasn't wearing his wedding ring... I guess it doesn't fit the socialization-deficient nerd character he was portraying.

"Weird Al" has a charisma that's all his own. The awkward, the misshapen, the socially inept flock to his banner.

Wow, they're quick!Weirdalfreak27 @ Nov 4 2006, 12:59 AM wrote: The vide of the performance has since been removed from You Tube.
However, in light of the recent attempts at legitimizing YouTube, it may very well return at some point in the future. There have already been instances of content that was taken down being put back up officially.

I'm really not surprised it's already been removed on youtube.
His character was married in the video though.
