It's the first ever review of the set, courtesy of longtime fan Adam Tyner on the DVD Talk web site!

The review is very thorough, including some revelations on the special features (which I guess would require a spoiler warning to those who really want to be kept in the dark). There are also a couple of technical glitches that were on his review copy, so heads up on those, too. But overall, it's a positive review.

Anyway, I love what I can see of the disc art. This is gonna be so great!
I totally missed your post Patti....yeah, that's what the first disc reminds me of, the third one looks like it could be similar to the cover for GH1, but with Al in a circle instead of a square
The tsunami of immediacy will wash away the flood of grief, and reveal a layer of naive optimism underneath

Yeah, I think I know what you're talking about, EmBob.

Don't you just love that BHD pic, though? :inlove:

*sorry, can't help it*
4 words that Al said to me that blew me away:

"How's Problem Child doing?" - 7/12/11

So awesome!

Thanks for sharing that review, Greg. Though I actually think the show was better than that reviewer did, it was a very informative review. After reading that, I'm really looking forward to hearing the commentaries. They really sound like a riot! It was also interesting to read about some of the stuff CBS forced on Al. This one really got me:

they were worried kids might avoid water fountains for fear of drowning.

Come on!
Oh by the way, I've cracked the code.

I agree the show wasn't that bad, so I'm kinda wondering now about the reported "all-encompassing bitterness" of the commentaries. It seems as if they're really ripping CBS (and the show itself) a new one, so to speak.

I'm also glad to see some verification that all of the musical performances are on the set. All of the press releases so far seemed to just single out Barenaked Ladies and Hanson, which was making me a little concerned if the other songs were snipped out (Shout! also had to edit a couple of episodes of "SCTV" due to music rights issues, for example).

Speaking of the musical guests, the review mentioned that Radish's song "Little Pink Stars" was muted in spots during the "Competition" episode. Does anyone recall this from the broadcast version? The thing is I just watched that episode when I was putting together the episode guide on All Things Yankovic (mainly because I didn't know what the hell the name of the song was they performed) and I didn't notice it, but then again I wasn't really looking out for it either.

That was a very good review. I actually agree with what he said about the quality of the show -- you wouldn't appreciate it unless you're a hardcore Weird Al fan. Really, I love the show, but I don't imagine I would if I wasn't an Al fan. Anyways, I can't wait for the release of the DVD set. It sounds great. The commentary sounds hillarious.

Thanks for all the kind words about the review!

To de-lurk and reply to a couple o' things:

It was also interesting to read about some of the stuff CBS forced on Al.
They also joke about what CBS would let on the air. A gag from one of the overdubbed education films about drowning in a water fountain? No go. Dipping arms in a vatful of chocolate? The network balked at first.

On the other hand: putting a hamster in a remote control car and running it off a ramp? No problem. Shaving off an eyebrow? Thumbs-up. Maybe the world is a very different place now than it was when I was growing up, but I think it's a pretty safe bet that more kids have access to rodents, RC cars, and razors than vats of molten chocolate. (CBS was even considering letting the Boolies commit suicide on-screen, something Al tossed out as a joke, never thinking it would make it all the way to the network.)

It seems as if they're really ripping CBS (and the show itself) a new one, so to speak.
Non-stop, pretty much. I mean, it's good-natured, and they have a lot of affection for the show too, but I think it's an understandable reaction to really sinking a lot of yourself into something only to have it turn out so far from what you'd hoped. Al says it's the hardest he's ever worked in his life -- and considering his aggressive touring schedule, that's saying a lot -- and that left him with mixed feelings about the cancellation.

"Bitterness" might paint the wrong picture (although Al says something like that, which is why I lifted it), but I wouldn't be surprised if they really do spend more time making fun of whatever's happening on-screen than they do talking about it.
