Here's a little word of caution. MGM is starting to whittle down their older special edition DVDs, removing bonus features and even additional aspect ratios. This new policy is specifically affecting those that are either two-disc sets or are double-sided discs.

The only good news is that since "UHF" was never labeled as a true-blue "special edition," it might actually be able to stay out of their radar, but still if you haven't had a chance to get the DVD yet, you might not want to wait.

Still, "UHF" might go out of print soon anyway if MGM is purchased by another studio this year, since for the last several months it has been courted by both Warner Bros. and Sony.

No, no, everything's cool right now...buy happily. We won't really have anything to worry about until MGM announces a "price reduction" for the movie. I'm just giving everyone a heads up that it might happen.

I've been worried about this ever since I saw the possibility on your website, Greg. I hope it doesn't happen, but maybe I should go and buy a second copy, just in case.
Oh by the way, I've cracked the code.

The problem is that as far as MGM is concerned, anything could happen and with each possibility we'd probably get a different result concerning "UHF."

If Warner Bros. buys MGM and discontinues all its DVD product, then that means we'll have to wait until who knows when before we see another release of "UHF." However, Warner is very good at putting together "anniversary" releases and plain old souped-up normal releases...for example, their special edition releases of "Wizard of Oz" and "A Christmas Story" blew away MGM's original releases. So even if we have to wait until 2009, there is a good chance that Warner will give us a "UHF: Special Edition" DVD as good as if not better than MGM's version.

Sony, on the other hand, really stinks at DVD, which is so odd considering they were king of another home video format, Beta. Well, actually I shouldn't overstate. Sony does very well at releasing cool editions of their really A-list movies ("Spider-Man," etc.), but they really don't go the extra mile for older catalog releases. In fact, their "pan and scan" technique is perhaps the most headache-inducing of all the studios. If Sony acquires MGM, then their release of "UHF" would probably be about the same as what Europe is getting from MGM right now.

Of course, there's always the chance that whoever buys MGM will keep MGM Home Entertainment running as a "separate" company (like how Warner has New Line Home Video), so "UHF" might not actually go out of print. But then that just leads to the current problem of MGM downgrading their special edition DVDs.

I don't know if I've already posted this but it's the mistakes in UHF. Kind of interesting.
