I totally understand why he would cut down White & Nerdy because it is so wordy and the song really functions as a two verse number. But this song reaches the climax just after the first verse! I think there were at least a few more jokes he could have included which would've let him do the entire song. Just when you're getting into it, the song is basically over.
Because he parodied the American Idol performance, not the studio version.

...also, note the applause from the "audience" at the end. ;)

The first time I heard this song was on the radio (Sirius). I didn't even know that Taylor Hicks had recorded it. No, I skipped the finals of AI, as I didn't really care by then, but I thought that Hicks was the better showman.

Then, when I heard that Al was parodying DIMYP, I :pirate: ( <--- yes, I wish we had a smilie for that one ) had a look around, the first one I found was live, had clapping at the front, only 2 verses, and clapping / cheering at the end. I think Al must have found the same song (I doubt the same way!), and that's why he only put 2 verses on. I didn't realize there was another version until later.

Sorry if I sounded harsh earlier, I was just trying to figure out why certain people didn't like it. Like some of his other songs, I disliked the original (I thought Taylor Hicks could have come up with a better 1st song, like some of the covers the other AI people released), but liked the Al version because I disliked the original.

In case you care, I don't think that people that don't like the song are ... I don't know, bad, or lesser Al fans. I have songs I like better and worse (and, of course, they change over time). We're having a friendly chat among fans. I hope no one thought I was picking on them or attacking them. I appreciate hearing why people don't like certain songs almost as much as why they do like them!
Holy crap, I've got a laser cannon!

I know I like this song enough that I want to make a fanmade video for it using the cameras from school. It'd be a nice scary experience.

Prosthetic Lips, I was glad to have this conversation with you. This forum is my only outlet to be as nitpicky as possible when it comes to Al. All my friends outside of here don't want to hear about it! B)

1) It seems fairly obvious that it was a last second addition to the record and as such Al didn't have as much time with it as he did with all of the other parodies. It's a pretty safe guess that Al got permission for the Chamillionaire parody and put a ridiculous amount of time into perfecting that song and then wrote this one almost as an afterthought.
That's probably true. I'm sure this was at least somewhat of a last minute deal. He probably still devoted as much time to it as he could, but that still was probably not a large amount of time.

2) The original song received almost zero radio play, doesn't even have a music video, and was only released on iTunes. The only people that know the original song are those who watch American Idol. While I admit that is a fairly large group of people, it certainly doesn't have as wide an appeal as nearly any other song popular this spring/summer. We've all seen what happens when Al parodies a song that no one's heard of.
I actually heard it on the radio quite a bit after Idol ended, and it wasn't only released on iTunes. There was a commerical single for it. I'll admit that doesn't mean much, as very few people purchase commerical singles anymore, but it was still something. I'll agree with you that most people who didn't watch AI didn't know this song.
Oh by the way, I've cracked the code.

I really didn't like this song at first, but it's really growing on me...Mainly because when I played it for my girlfriend the first time, she cracked up at the "usually I stare" line, since it reminded her of this really creepy guy at Uni that we both know. Anyone who doesn't like the song should stop and think of some creepy guy they know and imagine them singing it...pure gold!

I played this song randomly for my sister when I saw her last week because she was telling me about how this ex of hers had kinda turned a bit stalkerish, and after it was over she decided she needed her own copy of the CD. And it's continued to grow on me as well... I think if you try not to hope for something on the level of one of his more elaboately done parodies, there's definitely stuff to like here. :)
