I don't think so. I think it's just a hobby.
4 words that Al said to me that blew me away:

"How's Problem Child doing?" - 7/12/11

I think she's still learning to work with glass, but "hobby" seems a little unserious a word to describe learning a new art. Just because she doesn't have to pay her bills by doing it doesn't mean it's not an important activity.

She's a TV company executive: a senior vice president for Fox TV in their Syndications department.... well was until she got married I guess. I can't see someone like her sitting around the house for too long once Nina is in school though, so she may still be in that field

I didn't mean to imply it wasn't important, Helen, but what other term would be more suitable?

I can't get away with anything with you around!

I suppose calling glass blowing Suzanne's hobby would be like calling chocolate making mine. How about the word skill, or even craft, which would imply it's something that takes some effort and time to learn?

Didn't mean to make you feel bad, Patti! As for what word works better, "avocation" at least has more syllables :D but "craft" works too. I guess I don't like seeing any activity into which someone pours a lot of skill and passion (yes, like your chocolates) described in a sentence that includes the word "just."

I'd be extremely surprised if Suzanne went back to work for somebody else after Nina goes to school. She has to have a tremendous amount of media, marketing and business savvy to have achieved the job she had with Fox, but Al's schedule is so irregular and variable that a 9-to-5 job would seriously cut into her ability to spend time with her husband, and her expertise can just as usefully be applied to growing Al's "brand" as to promoting the media products of other people.

Or maybe the Yankovics will wind up as a professional musician married to a professional artist. Hey, it works for Steve and Barbara Jay. :)

Well, I suppose putting the word "just" was an error on my part. I do apologize for that. Craft works for me, too, although avocation sounds nice as well. Glass-blowing is fascinating to watch They have a glass-blower at the Ren Faire every year, and he'll explain to the gathering crowd what is involved in each step. Professional artist, now there's a nice title. *I like to call myself a chocolatier, perhaps even an unoffical one to Al and TBitB.* ;) I think calling Al and Suzanne by the titles you mentioned would be an apt description. You have such a way with words, Helen, which is why your sn suits you so perfectly. Thanks for your post.

irregular and variable?

Isn't that a bit redundant?

I couldn't help but notice that Suzannes Birthday wasn't listed on the calendar.

That's because it's not listed at weirdal.com.
This means something. This is important.

She's not the one in the spotlight- Al is. That kind of information is, therefore, meant to stay in the shadows.
