All I know is that if the Simpsons (Back when they actually deserved it....years and years and years and yea...etc ago) couldn't get an Emmy nod for best Comedy series for the fact that "It's just a cartoon" and the Oscars continue to blacklist comedy (Well...funny comedy), it's highly unlikely the Grammys will lead the charge and take a chance on something different (And I'm only saying that it's different in their eyes) in a mainstream category. Especially an award show that's so gunshy about their image and ratings (Tries to block certain artists from performing, votes for awards based on an artists name recognition instead of actual merit, etc). In fact, I'm willing to bet the album of the year category this year will have no artist who made their first album after 1980. That's the kind of year the music industry has had (And no, I'm not saying Elton or Springsteen or Dylan and the like don't deserve it. It's been great years for them)

Remember, the same suits voting for the Grammys are the same suits that blocked YP (Well...not literally.....at least I hope not literally)

I'm not saying Al doesn't deserve it, he does. I know that, you know that. Guys, I'm still an Al fan, and I hope I'm wrong. I've been wrong a number of times about this album (Of course, I was also right with a few of my guesses 8) ).
Go Al! Just don't be shocked and saddened if (And I stress IF even though I have a feeling it's when) it doesn't happen.
You have quickly thought up such matchless phrase?

I never said Al would definitely be nominated for Song of the Year, I just said I hoped he would. I know it's a long shot, and I won't be too let down if it doesn't happen, because of how the record industry works. I just like the idea of hope, that's all.
4 words that Al said to me that blew me away:

"How's Problem Child doing?" - 7/12/11

So awesome!

For best comedy album, Al might also be up against Tenacious D... they have a new album out this month. If he is, it might come close.

Al will definitely beat out the standup comedians... there's really no competition there.

White and Nerdy will probably win something either for the song itself or the video.

It's okay, Patti. I kinda know what Jon means, but nevertheless thank you for defending the cause. :)

I'm pretty sure that the Grammys (or whatever the organization is called, NARAS or something) created the more-specialized categories so they don't have to consider most of that material for the "big" mainstream categories. "We can't consider that for Record of the Year. It's already running in the polka category." It's essentially a bone they throw to the other genres of music, a sort of "Yeah, you're good...in your own way" mentality. I certainly don't agree with that, but that seems to be how it works.

But hey, who knows, W&N might still have a shot in another category. Al has been up for Best Male Performance in various video award shows before.

For a (though maybe not exact) comparison, it's sort of like how a new category was created at the Oscars for Best Animated Picture, which was prompted by "Beauty and the Beast" being nominated for Best Picture in 1992. Now they don't seem to feel the need to consider animated films for the normal Best Picture category anymore.

I thought that SOL's release date was the cutoff date for releases to be considered for this year's Grammys? If that's so, wouldn't Tenacious D be in the running for NEXT year?
"Weird Al" has a charisma that's all his own. The awkward, the misshapen, the socially inept flock to his banner.

Is it? I don't really know.

If that's the case then yay! Al won't have much of a competition then.

The steepest competition Al might be facing is Dane Cook.

Did they actually do that, or did it just work out that way? I mean, did they really sit down and say "right, we have to keep this guy from getting a Grammy....any ideas?", or was it just that they were excluding comedy music in general [basically isolating Al anyway]

Well they got rid of the Best Comedy Album category and instead came up with the new one called "Best Comedy Spoken Word Album" which means stand up comedy only. Now unless they were going after The Great Luke Ski or Richard Cheese, I assume the primary artist who suffered from this was Weird Al.

Did they sit down in a meeting and plan to stop giving him Grammys? I doubt it but I wouldn't be that surprised.
