Yeah, the whole Midnight Star thing. He's kinda quoting what the sign says, isn't he?

He can't help it if these store signs use incorrect grammar.

He can only strive to make sure they do, one sign at a time.

You know what, I was thinking the same thing. The way he pronounces "12 items or less" in that first line, making fun of that common sign is basically the first joke of the song.
