Hey gang,
Guess where I just got back from?
So I was supposed to be done with work in plenty of time but of course the last tape I had to log & capture took way longer than expected. I dashed out of the building and sped all the way across town from Culver City to Burbank, extremely frustrated whenever there was traffic even for a minute. Finally, I get to the studio and pull into the parking lot. It's 2:28 and I was supposed to be there at 2:30 at the LATEST. OK, I figure I'm just in time but then the car in front of me took literally five full minutes to show the guard her ID. Finally I get to the guard and he tells me I actually had to find street parking which was totally full everywhere. I was so frustrated I actually parked my car on a fairly big portion of Riverside Drive. I didn't care at all, though. I ran all the way from my car to the front of NBC, which felt like it took forever.
I arrive at the front and a few studio pages (no, not the Mark Foley kind of page. these had polyester suits!
) told me where I was supposed to go. I get in the back of the huge line and they eventually tell me they don't guarantee everyone will get in. I was pretty nervous because I was toward the very back, but I suddenly got a call from my girlfriend and we ended up talking for the whole 45 minutes I was in line. Guess there wasn't such a big hurry after all...
I finally get through security (cause baby I'm the bomb) and walk up some stairs into the Tonight Show studios. There are three main parts of it. Closest to the entrance was where the house band is set up. In the middle is the main set with couch and desk. At the far end was a bare stage with just a drum and keyboard set. They were trying to seat me very far away from that bare stage which I knew Al would be performing on, but I got away from the pages and sat myself in the front row of the balcony right in front of the stage Al was performing on. There, I waited for about 15 minutes.
Then Jay came out in his casual denim jacket and jeans attire and got friendly with the audience, made some jokes about people he saw, etc. Three Al fans dressed in extremely nerdy attire (clearly intentional, though I don't think most people realized it) got to go up and take pictures with Jay. One of them tried to get Jay to give Al a picture of his baby (!) but Jay wasn't having that. Once Jay left, the crowd control guy came out and did what I assume he does every day exactly the same. I could tell the jokes were always the same too. But he was definitely funny and it lightened the mood of everyone who had just spent all afternoon waiting in line.
Before I knew it they started taping the show. I had to sit through a taping of "The New Adventures of Old Christine" which was very unfun and took several hours. The Tonight Show is live-to-tape, which means they roll with whatever happens. No reshoots. Anyway, Leno came out and did his monologue, Penelope Cruz and John Stamos got their guest on, etc. During Stamos's interview I looked over behind the curtain that had been drawn in front of where Al would perform and I saw smoke rising up so I knew either Al was on fire or they were about to do some great lighting techniques.
Sure enough, a few minutes later they came back from commercial and Jay did the expected album cover plug and introduced the performance, which went something like this: Jon and Ruben were by their own instruments toward the back, each wearing dorky sweaters. (Wait till you see Ruben!) Steve and Jim, instrumentless, stood in front wearing a shirt and tie. Jim was wearing the same glasses that he wore in Pentiums. I don't recall if Steve was wearing glasses but we will see tonight. And then the music started up which sounded really great. Ruben was playing back the instrumentation we are familiar with, but Jon's drumming really sounded excellent in this setting and complemented the song well.
Al came out on a Segway!! He was wearing the nerdy wig and glasses with a shirt and tie. Jim and Steve's part was to be the hypemen (the sidemen who are often on stage with rappers and sing along with a few lines). They sang "look at me i'm" and "holy cow i'm" etc. and Al sang "white and nerdy." For the verses, they started about half the lines and Al finished them. The second verse was mostly Al on his own though they still chimed in every now and then. It should be interesting to hear how it sounds when properly mixed later tonight but visually it was very cool. There was also a little bit of choreography between the three of them. Very good performance. I was so glad to be there to see it for myself too.
After the performance, Jay came over and shook hands with Al, Steve, and Jim. Penelope and John also came over. Stamos shook hands with Steve awkwardly and chatted with Al several times. Penelope came over and gave Al a nice kiss on the cheek. Al thanked each of the band members individually as they left and then stuck around with Jay and the other guests for a few promos.
I guess that's the end of the story... Great time, a lot of fun. Glad I got to go. Can't wait to see how it looks on TV tonight.
