With DVDs, I like to be able to watch them whenever and wherever. I have tons of different DVD players at my house, friends house, car, etc...and it sucks to know that I'd only be able to watch the discs at home.
The same thing was said about DVDs... and CDs... and VHS tapes... and cassette tapes... Blu-Ray is the newest format and so for another year or so this will continue to be the case. Then everybody will have them too. The picture difference between Blu-Ray and DVD is so significant, it's definitely worth getting one (assuming you already have an HDTV). I just looked on Amazon for about ten seconds and already saw one on sale for $75.

Yes, BluRay players are cheap now... I myself went with a PS3, nothin beats blurays and videogames in the same system. What could be better than a system that outputs 1080p graphics for both Uncharted 2 and Hobo With A Shotgun?? and its only 299.

Yeah, I'm considering the PS3 route since it does have the Blu-Ray. I reallly would like to have a new gaming system, too. The latest system I have is N64... :o

I wish that they would have made Blu-Ray discs compatible with DVD Players, as well, albeit the content would not be visible in the HD when not on the Blu-Ray player. But, it is what it is. And with these new releases, I'll probably break down and get one somehow.

That's kinda like asking for a CD player to be able to play vinyls :P. The DVD laser beam is too big to read what's written on a BD disc

Yeah, what Alejandra said.
I think a lot of what confuses people about Blu-Ray is the fact that it looks exactly like its predecessor so most people assume it's the same thing, just better quality. In reality BDs use a completely different storage/access mechanism; they just happen to be disc-shaped.

and the discs are just a little bit bigger... thicker and a fraction wider, so a blu disc wouldn't even fit in a DVD player.
