Comic Cheat Sheet: How to Be a Fabulous Hack

This is from "Stage Time" magazine, and it's a great column about how comedians often cut corners to get cheap laughs without actually coming up with anything new or unique on their own.

What I especially like about this is that the comic who wrote it makes a specific point to exclude Al from his description of hacks who fall back on music to help tell their lame jokes (Saget, anyone?).

Cheap trick #4: “This joke is not funny, but when I put music behind it, it gets a laugh.”

I start my guitar lessons tomorrow. If a joke is not funny when you speak it, it might be funny when you sing it. A good melody and catchy chorus can change everything. If you do a song parody, then you didn’t even write the melody, it’s even less work. I don’t mean Weird Al’s stuff - his punches in the songs are actually well written tags that looks like it takes too much time.

It's just refreshing to see someone not go for the easy cheap shot and dump on Al just because he does parodies.

Thanks for posting that, Greg. It is refreshing to see someone point out that what Al does takes effort and skill.

I saw that post and thought, "I think I remember signing that, but just in case I'll sign it again." Imagine my surprise when I read the petition and realized I'd written it! I'd completely forgotten creating that petition three years ago. But it's still up, so those of you who haven't signed it yet...sign it now!

I found this while surfing youtube for live Al videos, since I probably won't be able to go to any this year. Pretty cool.
