I think Al knows a bit more than we'll have him know
Although Whatever You Like was a bit of a flop, I think he's hiding the originals from the mainstream to a certain extent, I have a rather detailed theory on this, but I can't be bothered posting it

Just look at the wall of hatred from the "mainstream" population on myspace for Skipper Dan. Al could advertise it amongst the right circles a bit more...but there are something that shouldn't be advertised as his next BIG single.

Jace, I think Al knows what he is doing. Just because you cant comprehend the reasons why he does what he does, doesn't mean that he doesn't.

Jace is right. I think Al just has old-school reservations about promoting his singles too much.

At least Al did some promotion for Poodle Hat. He guest starred on TV shows, gave interviews, etc.

I'm sure he'll do more promotion when the album comes out

Nobody knows what Al is thinking though. Maybe Jace is right, and Al doesnt know what he is doing. Or maybe Al is just putting these song out for the hardcore fans who know he is putting these out. And until Al says otherwise, maybe his fans shouldn't be badmouthing how he decides to run his business.
