To Mr. Meadows:

I could go off on a rant here but I won't. I'll just say a couple of things. First off, look at my S/N. I have a question. Why was it funny and OK to pick on the French before the Iraq war and not OK now? This is why Al still published it. I understand that the song was written before the declaration by France of their anti-war stance. Without getting into that whole debate, I'll just say that the timing happened. Aw, shucks. I know Al's going to get a little bit of misguided praise and criticism of the song (as we have seen here). While I don't see the song as a retort to France's CYA stance on the war in Iraq, I do see it as a song that is funny and should have been and did get released at this time.

Mike

P.S. I'm not all into the whole boycott France thing, but I am a dyed-in-the-wool patriot and consider my S/N as a statement that I'm proud to be an American where at least you "think" you're free. And I don't wanna bomb France or anything like that. I just think that...well...anyway...anyone wanna debate this email me, otherwise i'm gonna shut up now. 8)

I originally wrote this review for a non-al forum, but now I'm going to add more

1. "Couch Potato," parody of Eminem's "Lose Yourself"-----I, too burnt myself out on this song waiting for the album to come out, so now I skip over it...I love the song and know the lyrics by heart, I just have other songs to tackle, and skip over it now

2. "Hardware Store"-----CAN YOU SAY AWESOME? this is probably one of my faves ever....I've got everything but that verse down pat...and I'm about 1/5 done with that.....

3. "Trash Day," parody of Nelly's "Hot in Herre"-----I hated the original so much, it ruined the parody....

4. Party at the Leper Colony-----I didn't like it at first, but it's grown on me....

5. "Angry White Boy Polka,"-----a polka? what more must I say? It's sad to say, I'm a teen, and I haven't heard of but 2 of these songs.....oops guess I should listen to music other than Al...nah!

6. "Wanna B Ur Lovr"-----did anyone else think this song was a tad too 'normal' yes it had it's parts, but about half the songs were actual pick up lines! although the cheesy ones made me laugh

7. "A Complicated Song," parody of Avril Lavigne's "Complicated"-----the second verse alone makes this song great...the 1st and 3rd are ok...but the second is a classic....

8. "Why Does This Always Happen to Me"-----I loved it...it reminded me too much of myself

9. "Ode to a Superhero," parody of Billy Joel's "Piano Man"-----love it....not a spiderman fan, but I listened to this song, then finally thought I'd watch the movie, and found out I already knew the whole movie!

10. "Bob"-----interesting...not a palindrome person....I know I'll get to love it...

11. "E-Bay," parody of the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way"-----what he did at the end cracked me up....a good parody in my opinion

12. "Genius in France"-----at first, I thought this song was about 4 minutes too long...but every time I listen to it, it gets better

I'm not surprised Al decided to go ahead and release Genius In France. It is totally in character for him. The song was written, recorded and good. Granted I don't get the references, but I will trust the Zappa fans that this is good stuff.

Al didn't back off doing SLN after Kurt died. And he didn't change Buckingham Blues after Diana died.

I think he trusts his fans to get it. Not that I did, or do. But I feel better knowing he didn't get all political on us. My political leanings are very strong, and I would rather not have to disagree with one of my favorite people in the world. Unless of course Al and I share political views. Which I may never know. Cuz he doesn't care to give out his species like that.

And so we've been given another chapter in Weird Al's Ongoing Field Guide To Love As It Ain't.

Or maybe it's a PSA for the love starved Al fans. He's giving away all of his best pick-up lines since he ain't gonna ever need them again. :inlove:

I just love that Al and Suzanne picture. Makes me happy just thinking about it.

First off, look at my S/N. I have a question. Why was it funny and OK to pick on the French before the Iraq war and not OK now?:
When did I say it was not funny? I LIKED the song! I just don't like humor when it's mean-spirited. French jokes have become something else lately. . .like we REALLY MEAN IT! Hate and prejudice towards anyone for any reason isn't funny to me. Good-natured ribbing is fine, which I truly believe is all GIF amounts to. To paraphrase George Carlin: it isn't what's being said that you should worry about, it's who's saying it. In this case, it's Al. Al doing Zappa, no less, which means the song should have a politically incorrect target of some sort. Only now, it has somehow become politically CORRECT to bash the French, which again plays into the poor timing of the song's release. But like you said, Aw shucks! I'm glad the song is out and we can hear it!
While I don't see the song as a retort to France's CYA stance on the war in Iraq, I do see it as a song that is funny and should have been and did get released at this time.:
I absolutely agree. See? We're on the same page! (although what is "CYA"? The Canadian Yachting Association?)
I'm not all into the whole boycott France thing, but I am a dyed-in-the-wool patriot and consider my S/N as a statement that I'm proud to be an American where at least you "think" you're free.:

I consider myself a proud patriot as well. Still, I don't believe being a patriot should equal "hate those who disagree with you". (I'm not saying this is how you think, mind you! But I do seem to see a lot of that kind of sentiment, lately).

*gets off his soapbox*

I wonder if all the stuff Al lists on ebay really was on there. Knowing the way he researches, I bet it was.

I hope Ask Al comes back. Not that Al has much spare time these days, but he doesn't need to sleep, does he?

The other night, I checked, and I saw a lot of pet rocks and smurf TV trays......

You mean we called French people rude, we didn't mean it? LOL..j/j

You know the world's coming to an end when...

1. The best rapper is white

2. The best golfer is black

3. France is calling us arrogant

4. Germany doesn't wanna go to war.

5. Weird Al wrote a song about a political subject.

Oops...made that last one up...anyway just a joke I heard...no mean-spirited person behind it.

CYA...another phrase for watching your back...

Some people have a hatred for the French...not me, I just, you know, don't agree with what they did...

um...ok...

GRABS THE STEERING WHEEL AND WHIPS THIS BACK ON TOPIC

Poodle Hat - I still don't get it. Can anyone explain it to me? I mean I understand the connection to the dog on the head, but why? Almost anything would have been a better title than that in my opinion. 1/10

Poodle Hat is a reference to zappa- I didn't get it at first until I heard the line in GIF "sign my poodle." Apparently zappa mentioned poodles alot in his songs, even a book written about him with a philosophical title mentioning poodles. can't remember it right now, something like 'the discourse of poodle play'. . . no that's not it.
