I'm going to take an unpopular stance ... and I hope I'm not banned from this forum for stating it. But, hey, this is a "debate", right?

I believe it did poorly because it just wasn't a good movie. Poor direction, poor and predictable story line, and the acting was something you would expect from a B movie, at best. Our boy is clearly better suited for music, and music videos ... to carry an entire movie just isn't his forte. I've watched the movie a few times, and it's just not one of my favorites ... too slow paced and it gets boring after the opening Indiana Jones sequence. Even Richards couldn't save it. I think that's why it didn't do all that well at the box office.

There. I said my peace. Let the stones fly. :(

(with all that said, am I glad to have it in my DVD collection? YOU BET I AM!! It is Al after all!!)

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I like UHF. It's not academy award winning stuff or anything, but, I dunno. It lifts my spirits when I watch it. I will admit to watching it with commentary more often than without.

Well, I enjoy the commentary also. That goes without saying. But this debate is about why it didn't perform so well on its release to theatres.

And please don't get me wrong ... I enjoy seeing Al in just about any venue. But that is because I'm an Al fan ... most of the movie going public I would dare say probably is not as fervernt as you and I ... so to succeed, the movie needed more than it offers. I guess that's my main point.

(taking off my debating hat, because it fits oh so tightly)

Yes, I know it's a debate about why UHF didn't fare well in theatres. Just wanted to state my opinion of the movie. I don't think everyone thought it was a stinker, even though a number of critics were pretty harsh, and you don't particuarly like it. I still think it had more to do with the competition it was up against at the time.

I think it could have come out without any stiff competition at all, and done just about the same. And I hope you didn't think I was attacking your opinion ... I value it, and everyone else's on here, very much. As I said, I knew my thoughts on this subject would probably be unpopular. :)

(I don't think it's a stinker by the way .. certainly not a waste of film ... but I think it could have been a lot better with the talent involved)

No, I didn't think you were attacking my opinion. I still think it could have done a little better had it not been surrounded by much more popular releases. True, it may have been considered a smaller type film, and it wouldn't have done WAY better, but, I think it might have gotten noticed a little more had it been released with only a few other films, and not like 6 or 7 of them.

I will conceed that point ... it might have.

I AM glad it is out there, by the way. Seeing Al doing movie parodies is an awesome idea.

By the way, didn't Orion also do the Back To The Future movies?? Those are BIG time movies (even bigger than Robocop) ... and kinda goes against what some people were saying about a small production house.

BTTF is by Universal, not Orion. ;)

While I don't think it stunk, and I actually think it's pretty funny in some parts, the plotline can get a little predictable, and it is by no means the world's greatest movie as some people here say it is.

It's not fair, but I think the reviewers were just swayed by the fact that all these other really good movies were coming out at the time. And you can't do any promotion of a film that all the reviewers think stinks.
