4/15 - 501st Legion Bash

Post by Muppetboy09 »

Thought this was worth making a thread about. From the website's description:
For years 501st Legion troopers have been appearing with “Weird Al” Yankovic at his concerts across the country, bringing Star Wars to life for his fans while he performed “The Saga Begins” and then mingling with the audience after the show. Now Weird Al is returning the favor by making a very special appearance during the 501st Legion Bash to help us celebrate our 20th anniversary!

The performance will be the highlight of the evening and unlike what has been previously seen. We won’t spoil the surprises, but we want to make sure our members, their family and friends don’t miss this event!

We are a mere one week away from this event? What are your guesses for a setlist? I would have assumed a variation of the Mandatory set, but the "unlike what has been previously seen" leads me to think otherwise. Maybe we'll get a taste of what 2018 has to bring...

If it's unlike anything we've seen before, I wonder how that will work, considering the expectations of The Saga Begins specifically. It feels like they should be angling for something specifically Star Wars themed here, so I have no idea what that could mean.

It'd be nice if this was essentially a preview of 2018, but it'd be kinda anticlimactic for Al to debut the new set list several months (a year?) in advance; that would deflate the impact of it when the tour actually started.

Yeah, I don't mean debut the new set, I just mean doing a more stripped down set, less backing tracks, costumes, and some less traditional songs mixed in.

Maybe they should start with that acoustic version of Buy Me A Condo they tease every once-in-a-blue-moon.

Not sure if it's open to anyone except Legion members, but I will be watching all social media platforms tomorrow night and trying to piece together a setlist.

An exact quote from Al about the setlist;
This is the preview of the 2018 tour..where there is no costume changes, video clips, and we only play b sides that no one is interested in hearing. This is the the first... and LAST show of the 2017 tour!
So far, it's confirmed he performed (in no particular order):

CNR
Albuquerque
I'll Sue Ya
Acoustic Medley (presumably Eat It, I Lost On Jeopardy, Amish Paradise, Smells Like Nirvana, White & Nerdy, Rocky Road, Like A Surgeon)
Melanie
The Saga Begins
Yoda

If I find out more, I'll update this post.

Albuquerque is back! I'm 100% okay with that. I've never seen I'll Sue Ya live, because they cut it during the SOL tour performance I saw in 2008.

Pretty decent set list. He did Melanie during Poodle Hat which was cool because I love that song. Ill Sue Ya is probably the most surprising on the list.
