With Massey Hall, the lesson I learned is that I really should have hung back a bit and chatted with the ushers. They must have known what was going on. Although a concert being taped for a DVD is certainly not an everyday thing, I would think this lesson could probably be applied to some other types of concert situations too, from not liking your seat, to really wanting an aisle seat, to being sat next to someone highly unpleasant and wanting to get as far away from them as possible. Or, at least put it this way: you just never know what an usher might be able to do for you or what useful info they might have. Not unless you ASK.

Full version:
I found out about the Massey Hall concert long after tickets had gone on sale, so with the VIP presale not being an option, I ordered tickets online from the venue. My first thought was, well I'm obviously an idiot for not having kept a closer eye on the tour dates! But my second thought (after taking a brief pause from beating myself up) was, OK, well, get the best seats you possibly can at this point, but when you pick the tickets up at the box office on the day of the show, definitely ask them if any better seats have become available, just in case (I swear I had done this before at a different theater and that it had worked out). I really wanted a center aisle seat up close, especially for WBYL, but the aisle seats available online by the time I got to them were pretty far back, so I opted for seats quite a bit closer that weren't on the aisle. So anyway, a few hours before the start of the show, I showed up at the box office to get my tickets and asked if any better seats had become available (I figured it was unlikely, but didn't hurt to ask). The guy laughed. He was like, "No... that never happens." So then I switched to Plan B, which was to sit in my assigned seat but keep an eye on any better seats that weren't occupied, and if right at showtime they still appeared free, take a chance and sit in them. Of course, I realized that for the TV taping, they wouldn't want to leave empty seats near the front, and I did wonder how they would handle any potential no-shows or latecomers. Anyway, as I sat anxiously in my seat, things were looking promising for quite a while, but then I saw the seats being filled. I was a little surprised at how these larger, last-minute groups were suddenly arriving, but then I thought, oh well, I guess not everybody shows up early for a concert. Yep... I was that naive!!! Now I realize that the last-minute people flocking to these great seats were probably either the people being ushered up from rows that were much further back in the theater than my own row, or the people who got the free tickets they were giving out on the street, either of whom would have paid less for their seats than I did. If I didn't feel like a fool already for missing out on the VIP package, I felt like an even bigger fool after learning this! Not because of the way they handled the situation, but because I wasn't wise enough to figure out on my own how the situation was being handled. **smacks forehead loudly**

So, a lesson learned and shared!! There were better seats available (in fact, more than I would have expected), but I hadn't clued in on how many or how to get one. I don't know whether the box office guy actually knew what was going on or if he was totally oblivious to the situation like I was, but it doesn't really matter. Asking him if there was a better ticket I could exchange for was a totally fair question (there could have been a last-minute cancellation by a high standing regular patron of the theater, for example). But when I was unsuccessful at the box office, the NEXT person I should have asked about seats was the usher. By that point, who knows what might have happened. If I had been really friendly and outgoing, I might have learned about the unanticipated seating situation and been one of the lucky people who got moved farther up and closer to the center than their original seats, and maybe even been moved into an aisle seat. I don't think it hurts to ask nicely. You just never know.

Well, I hope this is helpful to someone! And now to nurse that throbbing headache that has resulted from smacking my forehead so hard...

Yeah. Massey Hall was definitely a tricky situation. It really sucked knowing that Mom was stuck all the way over on the right center aisle and I was a few rows back with the VIP. THEN, to see free people get tickets out on the street, and get sat in the first couple rows or wherever there was an empty seat, was really disappointing. However, the concert basically calmed my fears from those situations. Mom got sung to during the 2nd show's Lovr and the camera was basically on me at my seat a lot, and the aftershow with Wayne Isham and the TV crew.

But, yeah. Mom actually asked an usher if they were giving away tickets to fill up the first couple rows. And the usher said, "No, we never do that." Basically the same response that you got from the Box Office guy on better tickets. The usher said, "The people that you saw outside were helping to hand out tickets because of the long will call lines due to the mail strike." Suuuurrre, they were. That's why they ushered in these large groups and sat them in the front. Yeah, I wasn't born yesterday.

Hmm, that's interesting! Well, in the case of Massey Hall, I guess it wouldn't have made a difference if I had talked to an usher after all. Wonder if they were all instructed to say the same thing. Anyway, generally speaking, I would still say that it doesn't hurt to inquire politely with an usher, as well as to use your own brainpower - and all 5 senses - to assess any situation for yourself. Well, sight and sound, at least. Touch, taste and smell are probably not as relevant most of the time, or at least I hope not. I mean, I would do a lot to get a front row aisle seat... but licking it? Um, pass!!!

Haha, especially with the looks and surroundings of Massey Hall. Not licking anything in that environment.

Got my VIP packages for Oct 18 at the Palace Theatre in Albany, NY the beginning of last week. Now, I'm just awaiting my tickets. I can't wait to see what I get! And I'm glad to hear it's definitely a week, so I can expect to wait about another week before I get them.

Happy Birthday to me! :whoot: :birthday:

Hello,

I just attended the show at the seminole hard rock live. I purchased the VIP package and was more than satisfied with it. What i was hoping to find out about was the meet and greet that was set up for people backstage who had seperate passes for it. i asked around and got a couple different answers. Is it something he does for people in a certain kind of fan club? or maybe people who are related or personally connected to management or promoter? I only ask mainly because i would like to attend one if i ever have the chance. thanks for any feedback.

This question has been answered many times in this forum. This is probably the most recent topic which addresses the question. Bermuda himself posted a reply, which is copied onto the first page.

To sum it up:
There is no Weird Al fan club that has special access to backstage or aftershow passes.
Passes are mostly given out personally by the band members to people that they know, such as their family and friends.
Sometimes the venue gets permission to give out a few passes, which is done through some type of contest.
Occasionally you may find that a local radio station or newspaper will also have a contest giving away tickets, which may or may not come with meet & greet passes.
So, the people you have seen with special passes either "know someone" or they won them.

And Al does do a lot of passless meet & greets; it's often true what I overheard Bermuda say once, that the difference between having a pass and not having a pass was about five minutes.

I thought about sticking around to see him after the show but i think the hardrock was a bit intimidating. I went to a show in Boca last year but it was my first AL concert and i didnt know about the meet and greets outside of the venue. However he gave my gf a lapdance during i wanna be your lover so i dont think we missed anything. Hopefully i will get to see him sometime next year and i will try to hang out and catch him at the bus.

Also thanx for answering my question.

Well, yeah, the HardRock would not have been a place where they would do a meet at the bus. They stayed at the hotel on the casino/resort that night. I ran into Steve as he was heading up to his room, but that's the only way to meet them at places like that. Just get lucky.
