I'm a third-generation Dementoid on both sides...when I was little, my father used to sing "Shaving Cream" to me (funny song by Benny Bell, circa 1940's?) and my mom's mom would sing "Yes, We Have No Bananas" (a Spike Jones classic)-- in fact, my mom even saw Spike Jones live when she was a kid. My kids have seen Al, which they can brag to their grandkids about someday, and the circle goes on...
Anyhoo, when I was a young girl, my dad put the Dr. Demento Show
on the radio for me, and when the Doctor started playing Al's stuff, I knew that dementia was changed forever.
Every week, I'd think, "I hope he plays that Weird Al guy this week!" Then one day I was in a record store and saw that Al had released an ALbum, so I begged my dad to buy it, and finALly I was able to hear the Great One whenever I wanted, even on weekdays! Then in 1984 I was lucky enough to be able to see Al live in concert AND meet him
, and I've been completely obsessed ever since!
Anyhoo, when I was a young girl, my dad put the Dr. Demento Show

Praise AL!

I thought I had posted to this topic a while ago, but guess not.
Al "trickled" in and out of my view since I first saw his "Eat It" video on MTV. I remember my older brother talking about him. I heard Dare to Be Stupid album in full at my friends' house. Since I liked Star Wars so much they wanted me to hear Yoda. I thought "Like A Surgeon" was hysterical, especially since that year my father had a terrible experience with a surgery team. The "It's a fact, I'm a quack... " verse was the first verse of one of his songs that I learned almost to perfection, because it hit so close to home.
Bearing in mind that I am the same age as Al (by one week), I was pretty much busy with a lot of life and we didn't have "home" computers and the internet at the time, so keeping up with "fandom" and etc. was pretty much not my thing. I would catch glimpses of him on T.V. I do remember seeing him on "Circus of the Stars", I was at my grandparents house washing dishes. My grandfather had a tiny t.v. in the kitchen corner with a "rear view" mirror over the sink so he could see the t.v. So basically I saw a mirror image of Al doing his Circus act.
As I went on in life, I was falling into serious danger of "maturing" ... eeeek!!!!! I also had not completely accepted the fact that I was a geek, nor accepted the fact that I was strange. In the early 90's, I was involved as a youth leader. One of the leaders was becoming my friend. He was hysterical and different and intelligent. One day he was in the youth Pastor's office with the tape player quietly going, I walked past and my ears perked up and I listened again and I asked him "Who is this???". He said, "Weird Al". I said ... Wow you like his stuff? Fredd said "Yup" ... so I married him. (O.K. that's an exaggeration, that's a story for another day.)
So, after we got married we have been able to afford to have computers (helps wiht keeping up on Al and his fandom), we have been to a few concerts and we have all his albums and etc. And I comfortably settled into being a geek, gave up on maturity (be mature about important things like God, family and finances but the rest :-b :-b ) And here I am.

OK!!! NOW ITS TIME TO HEAR MY STORY!!! Ok... the day I fell inlove with Al's music was the day I saw The Saga Begins on Youtube. I was looking up Star Wars videos and saw The Saga Begins. It looked weird... so for sometime I never watched it...but then I clicked on it...and my life changed.

Well, when I was about 8 or 9, my stepdad bought me the Dare to be Stupid album, and my favorite song was OMM for a long time. I was a very warped and twisted child. I didn't really get the whole "parody" idea, but I still loved all the songs. By the time 2006 came around, I had kind of forgotten about Al (sorry) but I dicovered SOL and now I am back on track as an extremely dedicated fan. I have 9 of his albums and UHF, and I bought my friend Riley TWAS. My life has never been the same. I have become a much more fun and happy person because of Al, and I am ever in his debt.
And now for something completely different...

Yup, she bought me TWAS. I love it, and pet it, and stroke it and watch it sleep.
She was also the person who started me off on the Al foot. So it started with white and nerdy. Then progressed to the entire SOL cd. Finally, at this point, we are al enthusiasts who take any chance we can get to educate the Al ignorant of the world.

i was going to go school shopping in a near-by town (100 miles) and i didnt have any cd's to listen to on the way. and as i was complaining to my mom that i didnt have any cds. and at that moment, my oldest brother walks in and says "i just found a site where i can download all of Weird Al's cd's!!!" (no i dont support downloading music. he does but he still buys the cd's to support the artists)
and mom said "oh cool! give Kylan some. she has no cd's to listen to." so he gave me 9 of them. and i first put in Poodle Hat. i was thinking, "Poodle Hat? what the heck? thats a stupid name." and the first song i reconized was Trash Day. when i got back i looked him up, and since then i have been hooked.

I first became a fan on my 12th birthday. This is how it got started.
Well, about two years ago, my brother and I got in a situation that caused me to get a little upset with the Amish. We were outside of an Amish health food store, (yuck) and a strong wind blew this green slop stuff at my brother and I. (Why should they be spraying that stuff when the wind is blowing right at a store where people are walking out of? Huh? I'd really like to know!) And so on the way home, my brother started singing Amish Paradise and I said, "Hey I like that song! Who sings it?" And he said, "Weird Al Yankovich". So then I typed it in on Youtube and watch the video and fell in love. (By the way, I soon found out it was pronounced Yankovic) Then for my birthday, my brother got me Greatest Hits. So that's my story. Oh, and I'm not mad at the Amish anymore. I actually am very thankful for that green stuff.
I posted that same story here.
