What a lovely thread. It is interesting to see how many fans were inspired by Al to become vegetarians or vegans. I'm also a vegetarian - not because of Al, but I'm pleased to see so many are following his example.

What I love about Al is that he has been such a great role model. Back when my kids first brought home Bad Hair Day and realized their mom was almost cool because she could remember way back to the days of "My Bologna," I read about him turning down a huge sum of money from a beer company (Coors, I think) because he realized his fans were young and impressionable. That means a lot from the parental perspective!

I also love that my kids - a college freshman, a high school senior and a 7th grader - still love his music and are still willing to see him in concert with their mom.

Part of turning down the ad was the death of the actor who played Raul in UHF, killed by a drunk driver during filming. It's nice to see someone stand on his principles even when a lot of $ is involved.
Hmmm...something's gone horribly awry here...

Hmmm, I never saw this before...
I like many things about Al, not just his good looks, because I love those, but I love how while he could be out with friends and partying with famous people, he doesn't, instead he stays home with his family. Al is a family person and that means a lot to me, because even though I'm 13 and impressionable, it says that while I might have had thoughts of becoming famous just for the fans and to party, I could spend time with my real friends and family, and be a successful person without my picture on the tabloids next to the big, bold print of a headline I would rather not see. Al is serious, while doing comedic things and that means that he is down-to-Earth and works hard to his fans to get a great piece of his material for many years. Al is a role-model to me, a hero, and someone I will always look up to, not just because I'm short, but because he has such an impact on me.

I would have to echo the sentiments of others by saying that one of the things I like best about Al is the way he treats us fans. When I met him, I left feeling like he was a close friend rather than a celebrity. And I love his memory as well, the fact that he can remember so many of us must be a truly phenomenal feat!

I also admire the fact that he can pull off so many different musical styles, and do so as well as he does. He's really a creative genius in my view.

And I wouldn't be a true Al-Gal if I didn't say that he's pretty easy on the eyes, too. :P It's certainly far from being my primary reason for liking him, it's just a bonus, as was said before. :)

Al's a really nice guy.

Seriously--- you hear about the way some of the celebrities today act, and it's like geez.

But Al-- I swear, he's one of the nicest people I've ever met.
Aron-- Only the second accordionist to ever sit in the trunk of Torsoboy's DeLorean. Al was the first.

Well, there's a lot to like. First off, I like his music. I like that Paul McCartney likes him. I like his wit, his sense of humor. He's always very funny with his music. I like his quick wit, where he could be on an interview, be asked a question, and respond hilariously, just like that. I like that he's the only mainstream musician doing comedy music, and that he does it well. I like is musicianship, he is very respectful towards the artists he parodies, and that he doesn't ignore them. I like his talent with instruments, the fact that he can play many. I like his flexibility, both in the sense that he can write a funny parody of a rap, rock song, and power ballad, all on the same album, and in the sense that he can put his feet behind his head. I like his resilience, that he has followed the time and music of today, thus staying relevant, unlike those he parodies, who have mostly faded into obscurity. I like how he treats us, his fans, with respect. I like how he doesn't force his vegetarianism on us. I like his wife's name. I like how he introduces us to great comedy music. I like the dedication he gives when he performs in concerts. His concerts are amazing, with the costumes and big screens. But, most importantly, I love his nostrils! Wow! Those are some amazing nostrils!

I thought of something else too. I like how modest he is. Any time he's in an interview and someone mentions how great his music is, or how good he looks, etc. he always kind of laughs and shrugs it off. That sor ot "aww gee, thanks" attitude. I also like how he tried to mention Dr. Demento and his fans in all of his interviews. "got my start on the Dr. Demento radio show... got a great fanbase..." etc.

I like how hard he works to make great music and a great show every night.

I also like how modest he is. We have been going on for years and years about his good looks and he never said, "I know, I'm sexy." Al just thinks, "They think I'm sexy?"

:D Agreed, Melissa. I think that's just cute. Like how he reacted on Tom Green Live when that one woman called him hot - I loved the look on his face!

I just like so much about Al, it's hard to pin it down and define it. Overall, I think he is just a wonderful human being - talented, caring, and good-looking to boot - and a grand role model. (I still tell my mother that there are worse people I could be a fan of.)

I just thought of something after reading Laurel's thing about worse people we could be fans of. My grandma saw me going on here and was asking why I liked a guy who looks weird. I told her first that he doesn't look weird (I meant weirder than he's supposed to look) and that she always tells me to be different and stand out.

Being an Al fan makes you different, you're not the same old Orlando Bloom fan like thousand if others, Al fans like a man who is a terrific, funny musician and you really stand out.
