Yes, that's the joke. The joke is that he's viewing these nitpicky, trivial items as monumental flaws that would seriously mess up the rest of his life if he chose to marry said woman.

Either way, funny song.

I agree with Ryan. I mean, obviously, no sane guy would break up with a woman on account of a big earlobe. It's just an extremely exaggerrated look at a guy who wants perfection and will settle for nothing less. Most men would consider a woman "close but no cigar" when, say, she's a smoker who refuses to quit. Something that isn't a huge deal like religious differences but it's something that you really couldn't live with. The CBNC narrator just has much higher standards than most men.

It's kind of like "Why Does This Always Happen to Me?"--most people say that when they get fired from a job or a pet runs away. The narrator says it when he's faced with a minor inconvenience that's a lot worse for someone else. And the inverse of that is "One of Those Days"--most people say it when there's a small annoyance. With the narrator in that song, a 747 crashing into his lawn is "just one of those days."

Although I can't blame him for breaking up with Janet over the Joe Dirt DVD. There are some lines that just shouldn't be crossed. :P

Religious differences could, in fact, be a huge deal, to some people...I think.

I don't think anth was saying religious differences weren't a huge deal. He said smoking wasn't a huge deal.
4 words that Al said to me that blew me away:

"How's Problem Child doing?" - 7/12/11

So awesome!

Smoking could very well also be a huge deal...again, to some people.

Ok, but not as huge a deal as religious differences. Anyway, I agree more with OE, but I liked what anth said, too.

I wasn't saying I think the guy in the song deserves a perfect woman-or ANY woman for that matter-if he's such a jerk. I guess I just can't take the song seriously, and I'm not offended by it in the least. I know plenty of guys who are worse than that (well, not that they're looking at earlobes, per se..), and I've dealt with a lot of jerks in the past, so I guess that resistance allows me to look at this as being a very silly song. I'm all for girl power and such, but I should stop before I get in trouble.:P

This song always reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry breaks up with a girl because she eats her peas one at a time.
