Oh yeah of course... "horseshoes and hand grenades!" Just needed someone to jog my memory, thanks.
I couldn't tell a dirt clod from a plate of caviar.

I'll see what I can do, can't guarantee anything tho. I don't have much extra time, and trying to figure them out by hear is VERY hard to do.

Cinnamon writes...

That would be "quotes" -- I googled and it's a quote from the first thing that came up:

http://dab.nfc.usda.gov/news/nh-1998/nh ... -0998.html

I thought it was interesting.

Are you sure this is the origin?
If it's important, please try asking the author the source of his knowledge. Sounds to me like he knows of that which he speaks.

EDIT: Taken at face value the song is very funny. I just personally don't care for the video. But there are so many great things on/about this ALbum! I may have to do my first all ALbum review :)

is this song a style parody of Cake?
The tsunami of immediacy will wash away the flood of grief, and reveal a layer of naive optimism underneath

Yup. I didn't pick up on that until someone else mentioned it. I also heard "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" played back-to back with Al's song, and it really hit home.
4 words that Al said to me that blew me away:

"How's Problem Child doing?" - 7/12/11

So awesome!

The more I listen to CBNC intersmingled with other Cake songs, the more I can't tell the difference...he really got their sound down perfectly.. ^_^

Cinnamon, I see now that you quoted it. I didn't know where you had gotten that quote.

But I see now that it's from a government site, in some sort of revisionist polemic trying to reclaim "close enough for government work" in a way that makes the government look good.

I doubt the origin the author describes is real. But it's close enough for government work.

Most of the song is D G... I didn't feel like typing them all out. The chorus of course uses the same chords every time.

Code: Select all

Close but no Cigar [Chords]

Intro:
D D Dsus4 D x 3

D               G
Jillian was her name
D                           G
She was sweeter than aspartame
Her kisses reconfigured my DNA
And after that I never was the same
And I loved her even more than
Marlon Brando loved soufflé
She was gorgeous, she was charming,
Yeah, she was perfect in every way
Except she was always using the word "infer"
When she obviously meant "imply"
      A
And I know some guys would put up with that kinda thing
    G
But frankly, I can't imagine why

                         D
And I told her, I said, "Hey!
               G
Are we playing horseshoes honey?
   Am               G
No I don't think we are,
        D            G
You're close (close!)
       D
But no cigar!"

Then I met sweet young Janet
Prettiest thing on the planet
Had a body hotter than a habañero
She had lips like a ripe pomegranate
And I was crazy like Manson about her
She got me all choked up like Mama Cass
She had a smile so incredibly radiant
You had to watch it through a piece of smoked glass
I thought: after all these years of searching around
I've found my soulmate finally
But one day I found out she actually owned a copy
Of _Joe Dirt_ on DVD, oh no

I said, "Hey! Are we lobbin' hand grenades, kiddo?
No I don't think we are
You're close (close!)
Oh, so very close (close!)
Yeah baby, you're close (close!)
So close, but no cigar!"

	D5 D7
Aww yeah
	Dsus4 Dm
Aww no
	Asus4 Asus4
Aww yeah
	A A
Aww no
	D
Alright!

Julie played water polo
She wore a ribbon on her left Manolo
She had me sweatin' like Nixon everytime she was near
My heart was beatin' like a Buddy Rich solo
And she was everything I've dreamed of
She moved right up to number one on my list
And did I mention she's a world-famous billionaire
Bikini supermodel astro-physicist?
Yeah, she was so pretty she made Charlize Theron
Look like a big fat slobbering pig
The only caveat is one of her ear lobes was just a little tiny bit too big

I said, "Hey!
Are we doing government work here?
No I don't think we are
You're close (close!)
So very, very close (close!)
Oh baby, you're close (close!)
So close, but no cigar!"

(na nana na na nana nana nana...)

Missed it by that much
(but no cigar)
Aww yeah, alright
(no cigar)
Really, really, really close
But no cigar

Yeah, it took me about three or four listens to figure out CBNC was a stylized parody of Cake. I think that's so awesome that Al decided to a Cake-esque song! Their one of the more current bands that I really like.
