Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Inductee?

Post by TMBJon »

Similar to the Star thread, I wanted to discuss Al getting inducted into the Rock Hall. Though everyone here knows he deserves it, whoever picks the inductees might look over Al's career. I think we should look into who Al would be up against in 2008 and what we can do to make sure he gets it.
I couldn't tell a dirt clod from a plate of caviar.

2008? Is that the soonest it could happen?

No, he's eligible next year. The rule is 25 years after the first record -- My Bologna was Al's first record. The unwritten rule is Jan Wenner has to think Al's poop don't stink. It's more about politics than music.

edit 1/24/04 -- I learned recently that Jan Wenner himself is being inducted into the HoF this year -- as a non-performing artist.

Politics :P
This means something. This is important.

Yes, that would be a great feat. And I think it's more possible than Al describes his chances.

I thought it was 25 years after the artist's first album.

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artist's contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.

Well by that criterion, Al would be a shoo-in if there were any justice in the world. After all, Al has perpetuated some rock and roll tunes onstage years and years after their original performers tanked and subsided into obscurity, or died. How many people would be listening to the music of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" live in concert today if it weren't for Al?

Sounds like it's time to send Jann Wenner some concert tickets. Maybe some Ak & Zuie tickets too. Yeah, it's funny music, but there are no bozos on that stage.

I don't know if they would see Al as having contributed to and developed rock and roll. What do you think we could do as Al fans to ensure his spot?

Rolling Stone listed the likely 2004 candidates already and, though Van Halen was listed, Al was not. I didn't think twice about this because I thought he wasn't eligible until 2008.

So are the only options 2004 or 2008?

Once he is deemed eligible, he can technically be inducted any year, but that rarely happens.

I think its basically 2004 or 2008 depending on what "counts"
