Actually, that's just for live action series. The rules are different for animated programs because the category can also include one-shot TV specials. The reason a specific episode has to be nominated is to prevent having a, for example, "Let's All Love the French, Charlie Brown!" compete against a full 26-episode season of "The Simpsons," a full season of "The Powerpuff Girls," etc.I checked the list of nominees at www.cnn.com, and The Simpsons was nominated for best animated series, but no specific episode was cited along with the nomination. It's always been for the overall season.
If someone knows otherwise they'll need to cite a source and link a URL.

Hmmm ... it's up against some good competition: Futurama, Spongebob, Kim Possible. But hey! It's The SIMPSONS, fer cryin' out loud!! How can you NOT vote for it -- Al or NO Al??!?
['Least, I HOPE that's what the Emmy voters will say.... :lookround: ]

I always find that The Simpsons seems to express emotions better than other animated shows, possibly because it has such a large audience. And that's what they're looking for, isn't it? And of course there's the Weirdness factor to consider.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen it because A CERTAIN TV CHANNEL (not mentioning any names, TEN!) has been too wrapped up in the 3rd season of Aussie Big Brother.
Jeez people.
If new Simpsons episodes haven't started airing in 9 days from now, I'm going to resort to downloading that episode.

I downloaded it off Kazaa, and it was quite poor - it stopped every 10 minutes and you had to move the position indicator forward and it's stupid. Don't get the .WMV file.
Yay for the Emmy!
