Ebay -I am aware that I could be facing a public stoning a la Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," but this could very well be the best parody on the whole album.

No stones from me....I definitely think it's the best parody on the album, It could even be my favorite song on PH, period (but Genius in France and Why Does This Always Happen to Me are very closeby)!

I wouldn't go as far as to say this is my favorite album, but I think Hardware Store, Trash Day, and Bob are all Al masterpieces.

And I think that you don't know that feeling of being an Al fan laughing out loud with music but don't getting jokes!!!

I do get most of the jokes. But I usually miss the Parody aspect because I just don't know the original. Thanks to JKaudio, I have a better grasp of the parody. (Thanks, Jeremy!) Al and I apparently have very different taste in music. He listens to a lot of people I don't like, or have never heard of, and I listen to him. :biggrin:

Sometimes it's just disgusting if you don't get the whole joke, you must be an ice-cream fan to get "I Love Rocky Road" or a gossip freak to understand "Headline News", and that's why I was disappointed with "Couch Potato" - there's maybe two or three programs or celebrities from the huge list Al mentions that I know... Maybe you could explain them to me

Actually Seva, your english is quite good. I think what you are missing is the cultural references. And maybe a little bit of vocabulary.

Hey, Bobbi! I don't know that Al actually likes every artist he parodies *style or actual* or puts in a polka medley. I think he uses their songs to show he has his finger on the pulse of pop culture. Sometimes, though, he influences me and gets me interested in an artist, too. For example, I listened to Zappa in my youth, but never bought an album. Now, I think I might get one or two.

I always thought that too, but I recently read an interview (don't know where it was) that he said for a song to make it into a parody it didn't have to necessarily be good or one he liked, but it had to be popular enough for people to recognize it. Which makes sense. Al could parody all kinds of songs he likes, but if you don't get the reference because you don't know the original, then your listening experience would be a lot like mine...

Q: I've always been a fan of your style parodies . . . Do you do them out of affection for the artists, or do you pick someone with an easily-identifiable style for the humor value?

A: I would have to say, almost without exception, it's done out of affection, out of fandom. Generally, I do a style parody because I really, really enjoy the artist, and I happen to have all their CDs, and I've been doing research on them for a long time. I don't think I'd ever do a style parody just because I thought a band was popular -- I might do a parody based on that, but the style parodies are based on genuine affection.
