Dave,
I was just wondering what would happen if we raised all that money and it was turned down.

We try again next year!

We're set up and prepared to carry on as long as it takes.

Does said next year require raising the money again, though? I'd still donate every year if that was the case.

No. To submit the application is free. You only need to put your money where your mouth is when the celebrity you plan to sponsor is nominated by the review board, or in other words, when he or she "gets the star."

I believe the $15,000 is only needed once. It will be held in account until it's used. I don't think it's paid to the committee *unless* Al is picked.

I'm not saying this would happen, but I'm playing devil's advocate here. Would there ever be a point, say, 5 years from now, Al still doesn't have the star. Would you return the money or shift gears to get Luke Ski a star?

Luke will have enough of his own fans to do the same for him.

Al will get a star. Or are you saying that "Weird Al" Yankovic doesn't have the name recognition and stature in the recording industry of, say,

Ray Anthony, Blue Barron, Jimmy Boyd, Elton Britt, Israel Lopez Cachao or Richard Crooks? Who are these people, anyway? THEY all have stars! And Gene Autry has four.

But there was some discussion when this idea was first being batted around about any surplus funds being donated to a charity of Al's choice. That does seem a better idea, in the EXTREMELY UNLIKELY case you brought up, than diverting the funds to another artist, whatever his merits; it would be kind of a bait-and-switch.

They're keeping a tally of the donations over at www.weirdalstar.com -- so far over $1,000 has been raised. Well done, guys!
