"Good ol' Al might be weird, but the bro ain't stupid."

 As if to imply weirdness and stupidity are directly correlated?

That does seem like a back handed compliment or something. That he just because he does comedy that he should be dim witted.

I suppose that people unfamiliar with comedy music are more used to sub-par, low-brow humor to the likes of Adam Sandler being associated with the word, "comedy".

I wouldn't take it too personally. The article also claims it's surprising that John Legend and Tom Morello are college-educated even though they are two of the most outspoken, politically active musicians of the last decade. Yet they call Legend a "smarty pants".

Why is it even worth mentioning that they have college degree? Do people in USA rarely go to college? In Lithuania it's much more unusual for a person NOT to have a degree. Even stupid ones pursue education, because if you lack it, you're screwed. Unless you are older person, like Al, then it's about 50/50 percentage of people with and without degrees, but it's still not unusual.

Now if they wrote a list of musicians with PhDs, that would be more impressive.

From what I heard, Europe has a lot of free, or to us - cheap - secondary education.
Here, a community college degree/diploma is AT LEAST 6 grand, if not more.
And It's not unheard of to have some studies go beyond 50k.

While it's not "rare", it is something to mention. At least where I am.

Do you have to pay even if you're smart? Like, highschool valedictorian smart? Here some professions are expensive if you don't get a free place, but if you aced your graduation exams and keep on getting good results it's free and you can even get a small grant.

You can get scholarships, but even the best ones don't usually cover everything. College is like, really expensive here. $$$

Depends how smart. In the medical fields some scholarships will pay for the entire thing. Some of the most expensive ones are only 10k.
I was going to go to a private college, 25k/y, and the scholarship they gave me was only 500$. Aha...
Yeah I didn't end up going.
A lot of scholarships are generally under 1k. AT LEAST AROUND HERE, where we don't have as many sponsors as say, Alberta, or Toronto or Vancouver, it's really rare and hard to get a scholarship or grant over 5k.

Schools also don't offer schooling. And room and board/dorms are just about as expensive as the tuition itself, heh. It's really a losing battle for education over here. I think they said it's inflated like 200%? My grandfather remembers going to college on 100$.

Most of the people who go to university on this side of the world spend nearly the rest of their lives paying off student loan debt. University education is prohibitively expensive. It's sad.
