Mystery gig in the early 90s?

Post by ludovica64 »

Seen on Twitter.
Tabernacle Atlanta @TabernacleATL
Go back in time... What was your first concert ever?

@rhythmicjohnson
@TabernacleATL Weird Al Yankovic at Lake Winnepesaukah in Chattanooga Tn.

Well I recently put all the archived gigs on the Mothership into a database and this sounded unfamiliar so I asked if he could remember when it was and he said
"umm lets see I think it was in 1990..I was 14 so maybe 91"

OK Even given that the place he is talking about looks like it would probably be recorded as Lakeview GA there still doesnt seem to be any record of such a concert, so either he is mis-remembering (would you mis-remember your first concert?) or there are possibly undetected omissions on the Mothership? Or am I missing something myself? (this seems most likely and though I looked and looked my knowledge of geography isnt that great)

What WAS Al doing all through 1990 and 1991? There seems to be almost nothing, and at the height of his celebrity too. It's likely this person is mistaken anyway, but that question remains- What was Al doing in 90/91?

Well I know nothing about that concert, but here's what we do know about 1990-1991 in Weird Al:
In June 1990, the band recorded all of the originals for Off The Deep End. In December 1990, they recorded three parodies. Then as far as I can tell he took off 1991 to produce Babalu Music which was released in October of that year. Black Or White was released in November 91, so Al would have been trying and failing to get permission to do that parody around then, followed by Smells Like Teen Spirit's success which was around the same time.
So essentially you could say Al spent most of 1991 just waiting for a lead single idea to pop up.
I couldn't tell a dirt clod from a plate of caviar.

Plus, when he wasn't busy recording songs at that time he may have been just meeting or dating the woman who would later influence him to read Diet For A New America and go vegan. The FAQ on the mothership says that he read that book in '92 so, than that timing seems to check out.

With all due respect, I would hardly call any period from 1986-1992 the "height" of his celebrity. That had to have either been 84/85 or sometime post 2006.

OK Thanks guys. I guess that guy was mistaken.. though it seems odd. As far as I can tell Al has never played at that venue at all let alone in the years mentioned..

I figured it out! If you go to his Twitter, he lists it as a Weird Al Yankovich show.
