Al's doing a very brief set, and it will be a rare performance since I won't be playing. I have other plans and there was almost no notice on this.

Looks like Jim, Steve, and Ruben were there, with someone subbing on drums. Someone said he sang "Close to You", dedicated to Donald Trump. Also, another post says they were treated to a medley to wrap the show up. Excited to hear about it and hopefully see some videos!!!

Wow, the unplugged version of Amish Paradise. Nice to see it make its way into the...wait, Smells Like Nirvana? Wait, White and Nerdy? That makes no sense...and I love it. There don't seem to be any videos anywhere, and I believe someone said photography wasn't allowed, so it sucks we may never see or hear the medleyTMBJon wrote:The setlist was:

Re: 1/10/2017 - Judd Apatow & Friends
It should be noted that Al sang The Carpenters' "Close to You" in it's entirety, without changing any lyrics, after telling us the song was dedicated to. . .someone specific*. After they finished singing, Al said "In case you couldn't tell, I was being REALLY sarcastic!"
This might have been the highlight of the entire night, but then the acoustic medley of classic parodies was amazing. I had seen a shorter version of this at the Hollywood Bowl, but as Jon said he worked in Amish Paradise, Smells Like Nirvana, and White & Nerdy. Awesome.
Unfortunately, I had to leave immediately after it was over. Did anyone stay? Did Al do a meet-and-greet afterwards?
*It was an ACLU fundraiser, so you can probably guess who.

Re: 1/10/2017 - Judd Apatow & Friends
I've been to the Largo for a bunch of shows, so I knew that it was a really small room and no reason to get there super early to get better seats. I got there around 8:00, and soon after I arrived I ran into Tony Goldmark so we caught up for a bit.
The show started a little after 8:30 with Judd Apatow doing a stand-up set, which was mostly about Donald Trump. He then introduced Cameron Esposito, a great comic I've seen on a few shows but never saw her live. After that, a comedian named Jamie Kilstein performed two spoken word political rants (one called F*** the NRA, and one called F*** Mike Pence) which were accompanied by Moby on guitar. After that, the Roastmaster General himself, Jeffrey Ross, did a set which included roasting four members of the audience.
The last act of the night was Al, who Judd warmly introduced by saying he's been a lifelong fan since seeing Al play with Dr. Demento in the 80s. Al came out wearing a trademark maroon shirt and was joined by Jim and drummer Nick Vincent (a worthwhile fill-in for Bermuda who has played with Frank Black, Art Garfunkel, John Fogerty, and many others). From the start, Jim was having guitar issues. There seemed to be some confusion about which cable to plug into, and Al stalled by calling for a DRUM SOLO!!! (Later on during another technical difficulty, Al called for a BASS SOLO, too.) Eventually, Al introduced the first song, saying it was about the founder of the ACLU, Charles Nelson Reilly.
After CNR, Al brought out Steve and Rubén, joking that for every song he would bring out two additional musicians until they were the Polyphonic Spree. Al then said he rarely gets political in his songs or on stage because he doesn't like being called a "cuck" or a "libtard" (!!) and he's too much of a "snowflake" to handle that kind of criticism, but since this was for the ACLU he felt it was enough of a "safe space" to go there, so he dedicated the next song to Donald Trump. That song was a cover of "Close To You", which I'd never seen live before. It was a pretty straight cover except for some funny harmonizing at the end. As the audience applauded, Al said "and in case you couldn't tell, I was being really sarcastic!"
Then Al did a bit that is so old it pre-dates Bermuda joining the band: "well, we have one more song left for you tonight... but it's going to be a medley of every song ever written". Then they launched into the acoustic medley from the Mandatory Fun tour. This started normally with Eat It and I Lost on Jeopardy, but as soon as you'd expect to hear from Don Pardo, the music changed and went into Amish Paradise, Smells Like Nirvana, and White & Nerdy before going back to I Love Rocky Road and Like A Surgeon. The arrangements of the three new additions fit right into the acoustic medley they've been playing for a while, so this was essentially an extended version without the "unplugged" staging. I am very curious about whether these were new arrangements written specifically for this show and nothing else, or if they will be new additions to a 2018 acoustic medley, or even if they were written for the 2015 tour and removed because Al decided to play those songs in full. After this medley, Al jumped in the air for the last note, thanked the crowd and left, and then Judd Apatow thanked everyone for coming.
After the show, I hung out by the stage door for about ten minutes chatting with Tony and then UHJeff showed up and I got to talk to him and his friend for a while. I am guessing Al eventually came out to say hi to the half dozen or so folks who were there, but it was 11:30 and I wanted to go home and watch Obama's farewell speech so I headed out around the same time Jeff did.
It was an excellent night, well worth the $100 ACLU donation (which frankly I would have made without a comedy show attached)!
