Opening for Michael Jackson 1988

Post by YankoSwag 8888 »

If Al hadn't made UHF he would have opened for Michael Jackson in Europe in late 1988. I imagine the set list would look something like this

1. Eat It
Costume: Red jacket, black shirt, black pants
Notes: Al plays the keyboard
2. I Lost On Jeopardy
Costume: Black shirt, black pants
Notes: Al plays the keyboard
3. Melanie
Drum Solo
4. Yoda
Notes: Al plays the accordion
VIDEO
5. Dare To Be Stupid
Costume: Hazmat suit
Notes: Al plays the keyboard
VIDEO
6. Addicted To Spuds
Costume: White shirt, Black pants, black tie
Notes: 2 Mr. Potato heads join Al on stage
7. One More Minute
Costume: Black suit jacket over ATS costume
notes: Al goes in the audience
VIDEO
8. Dog Eat Dog
Costume: Big white suit
VIDEO
Guitar Solo
9. Fabulous Food Medley:
Rye Or The Kaiser, I Love Rocky Road, Spameater, Feel like Throwing Up, Avocado, Lasagna, Whole Lotta Lunch, My Bologna
Costume: Hawaiian shirt
Notes: Al plays the accordion
Bass Solo
Hernia Rap
10. Living With A Hernia
Costume: James Brown suit
VIDEO
11. Like A Surgeon
Costume: Scrubs
Notes: Al plays the keyboard until the bridge. Al murders a women with a chainsaw during the bridge.
VIDEO
12. Fat
costume: Fat suit
BAND INTROS
Guitars - Jim West
Bass - Steve Jay
Drums - Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz

I wouldn't sacrifice UHF for a modified version of the 1987 tour but it would still be cool.

I bet it would have been:
1. Eat It
2. Fat
3. Snack All Night (preview version)
4. Dairy Queen (parody of "Billie Jean")
5. I Want a Snack/KFC/The Meal You Crave medley (parodies of "I Want You Back," "ABC," and "The Love You Save")
6. Don't Stop Til You Eat Enough (parody of "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough")
7. I Just Can't Stop Eating Food (parody of "I Just Can't Stop Loving You")
8. Blame it on the Cookie (parody of "Blame it on the Boogie")
9. Wanna Be Eatin' Somethin' (parody of "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'")
10. Man Eats a Gyro (parody of "Man in the Mirror")
11. Dirty Pie-ana (parody of "Dirty Diana")
12. Dare to Be Stupid

In all seriousness, Al probably would've gotten only 3-5 songs at most. That's the common rate for opening acts, and MJ had long concerts as it was. The rabid fans would be restless.

I wonder if he would have been allowed to play any Michael Jackson parodies at all, seeing as how that might double up on the material. I read that when Al used to have an opening act, if they were musical they were not allowed to do any kind of song parodies.
Love and peace.

I don't think he would've done even the Snack All Night preview at all because Al said himself when he asked Michael for his blessing, he said no because he felt Black or White shouldn't have been parodied. Also Black or White was not released until 3 years later in 1991 so he couldn't have done it anyways

But if "Black or White" hadn't been written yet, then Michael wouldn't have felt that the subject matter was too serious to be parodied, and he would have given Al his blessing.

Maybe in this hypothetical scenario, Al wrote "Snack All Night" first and then MJ parodied it.

Right. So Al would do "Snack All Night," then Michael would write "Black or White" and refuse to give permission for "Snack All Night." Remember, Michael's objection was that the subject matter of "Black or White" was too serious to mock. It had nothing to do with whether the song existed or not.
