I love this song, probably partly because I like Billy Joel's work from that era so much. It's easily among the very best of Al's early, unreleased tracks.

Could someone who says this song is among their favorites please tell me where they got it from? Is there just the version on the Basement Tapes #5, or are there more than one? I would like to have this song as well.

I wanted to post this in the eBay topic, but it seems to have gone missing so this one will have to do. If anyone's looking for this song, it's on this Dr. Demento CD:

I was going to bid on it but I just ordered Basement Tapes #5 so I don't need it anymore. :D

I like the live version a lot better than the demo... gives a great picture of what an album version would've sounded like.

I have a question, The all mighty Al said it was to outdated for an album, but then why was it in the set list for Tour of the Universe (1984) ?

Maybe he needed it to fill out the setlist? With only two albums out, he didn't have the back catalog of material he does now to choose from.
"Weird Al" has a charisma that's all his own. The awkward, the misshapen, the socially inept flock to his banner.

Hope its okay to bump such an old topic....

I was thinking about this recently. I heard it many years ago, and I wonder...

Al says that his parodies are always in good fun, never mean spirited, and the artist is always 'in on the joke', but this.... IMO feels like the exception. I mean, it was the very beginning of his carrier so I don't hold it against him, and Billy let him parody Piano Man many years later, so there must not be any hard feelings there (Or since it was concert only there's a chance Billy didn't even know about it.) But lately I've just wondered a little more...

DID Billy know? Was he offended at the time? Was that why Al, from then on, never made fun of an artist again? (He certianly POKED fun at them, but, the big one that comes to mind, Preform This Way, not my fav parody, but it still feels in good fun, with maybe one or two small jabs at her, but nothing as strong as "Whats the matter with the song he's singing cant you tell it's pretty lame?")

Actually I decided to look online and make sure I couldn't find answers somewhere else before I posted, but the only thing I could find anywhere was "Weird Al has since apologized to Billy for the song." Which, honestly, sounds about right...

But it makes me wonder even more. Did billy confront him THEN, and that's why he adopted the 'ask them/be in good fun' thing?

I dunno, just random thoughts.

There was a fairly recent Q&A with Billy at a college and he was asked about this song. He reportedly sang a bit of it, but I've been unable to locate a clip
