So I haven't commented on this song yet. No more will the world have to live with this injustice!

It's an okay song, but I think you kind of have to be an Al and/or Pokemon fan to appreciate it. As my younger brother and I (and seemingly every other kid we knew) were Pokemon fans back in the day, I remember watching the anime on Kid's WB, playing the numerous games (Gameboy, N64, trading card, etc.) feverishly, and seeing the first movie at the theater. (And crying when Ash died, because shut up, we were kids.) We didn't see the the second movie until my brother got the VHS for Christmas; by my own request, I got the CD soundtrack to balance things out, 'cause I wanted Al's song!

So, having finished the reminiscing, has anyone else noticed that Al says Ditto twice in the song? :Y (Let's make this a running gag!)

I was listening to this song today and I'm curious... what's the context for it? I mean, I know it was in the credits of Pokémon the Movie 2000, but I wonder how its creation came about. Did The Pokémon Company contact Weird Al and ask him to write a song, or did Al just write this and decide it'd be well suited for the film? It's probably the former, but I'm still interested in finding out more information.

Upon doing research on this, I stumbled upon the Weird Al Wiki where it says the tune of the polka is based off of the "Follow Me" theme from the Pokémon games. Strange that I never realized this myself as I've played the games for probably 15 years, but I looked up the theme and I can totally see the resemblance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDAW0Hn11wI" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Makes me enjoy the song even more.

So now that Pokemon Go is out and this song is suddenly relevant again, I've always wondered: When writing the song, did Al have to do any research on the names of various Pokemon for this? Granted, some of what he sings had a large part in Pokemon 2000 (like Lugia and Slowking) and others were just big Pokemon (like Pikachu and Bulbasaur), but then there are also quite a few thrown in there that aren't as popular as others (Mankey, Oddish, and my personal favorite as a kid, Lickitung) that come to mind.

Did Al just look up a list of names and decide off of that, did 4Kids give him a list of Pokemon to use, or something else?

He seemed to have recycled this for parts of Angry White Boy Polka and reused parts of Bohemian Polka. The song was actually pretty good.

I love this song! For a longest time I thought Al just made it for Poodle Hat or for craps and giggles, but I didn't find out until this year he wrote it for Pokemon The Movie 2000. I saw one of those "unfitting music" videos on YT with the song accompanied by George Bush getting hit with a shoe.
