Re: Money For Nothing / Beverly Hillbillies
I'd always been under the impression that Al was literally just singing the lyrics of the Beverly Hillbillies theme song over the Money For Nothing music. I was surprised to discover that it's really the theme song heavily manipulated to fit into the Money For Nothing meter, which is even more impressive to me. I always knew something was up with the "little Clampet" line because I have heard the unedited MFN on occasion and thought that was way too similar to be a happy accident!
Anyway, I thought I'd try to map out the lyrics, identifying which parts are taken from the Beverly Hillbillies theme song and which are taken from or loosely inspired by "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits. The remainder is basically by Al, so it's no wonder the lawyers couldn't decide what to call it!

Now lookie here people
Listen to my story
A little story 'bout a man named Jed
You know something?
That poor mountaineer
They say he barely kept his family fed
Now, let me tell you
One day he was shootin'
Old Jed was shootin' at some food
When all of a sudden right up from the ground, there
Well, there came a bubblin' crude
Oil that is Well, maybe you call it black gold or Texas tea
He gonna move next to Mr. Drysdale
And be a Beverly hillbilly...
Before you know it, all the kinfolk are-a-sayin'
Yeah, buddie, move away from there
That little Clampet got his own cement pond
That little Clampet, he's a millionaire
Now everyone said Californie
Is the place that you oughta be
We got to load up this here truck now
We got to move to Beverly
Hills, that is
Swimming pools
Move-a-move-a-movie stars
Huh
Lookat that, lookat that
Beverly Beverly Beverly hillbillies
Y'all come back now, y'hear?
Beverly Beverly Beverly hillbillies
Beverly Beverly Beverly hillbillies
Beverly Beverly Beverly hillbillies
He really lucked out with the lyric "Beverly Hillbillies" fitting flawlessly over Sting's "I Want My MTV" refrain!

Gorgeous parody based off of a gorgeous song. Very spot on. I find it slightly underrated. <3

It is the best parody EVER!! I find the setlist on this tour would have been so much better with it in the medley. So much better than the original.
What a racket they're makin', Jack, they keep me up at night playin' their electric guitars!!

Re: Money For Nothing / Beverly Hillbillies
There was a cassette single of this widely released apparently, but there was also a promo CD single sent to radio stations and the like. Does anyone have the CD version? There's one on eBay right now for $499.99, so it's obviously not common.
About the video, it's so similar to the original, could it have been animated by the same people?

Certainly, at least, the same 3D animation software.Teridax wrote:About the video, it's so similar to the original, could it have been animated by the same people?

Re: Money For Nothing / Beverly Hillbillies
Not necessarily. The original video was made using a special console designed specifically for CGI, whereas Al's video, according the the UHF DVD commentary, was made on a friend's home computer on a significantly cheaper budget.TMBJon wrote:Certainly, at least, the same 3D animation software.Teridax wrote:About the video, it's so similar to the original, could it have been animated by the same people?

Wouldn't that undercut your original question?

Well, I guess it does. I forgot I posted that question, and I didn't notice that it was myself I was answering. Uuuuugh...TMBJon wrote:Wouldn't that undercut your original question?
The reason I was able to answer my own question is because I listened to the UHF DVD commentary between postings. I highly recommend the commentary, by the way. Both funny and informative.
