I can't believe I didn't realize until only yesterday the irony of this song's hard rock tone (the very music parents are known for stereotypically yelling at their children to "turn that crap down!") contrasted with the subject matter in the lyrics.
I am shocked, offended, and a little turned on.

I don't curse. Except around vampires.

I also think that's sort of a shout out to old-timer Don Henley playing music like that.
I couldn't tell a dirt clod from a plate of caviar.

I never thought of that either
That might have something to do with the fact my parents listen to music louder than I do :P
Oh snap!

And THAT there is the precise reason this song just comes together so perfectly! Lyrics, sound and all, it's this one big satire on the whole subject.

I just heard this song for the first time the other night and ADORED it. As a guitar girlie I was just dreamy over the riffs, and melody.

And Al really can belt OUT the words like a true rocker that is known for music like this. <3
He has the benefit of being able to rock AND polka. ;D

Thanks for quoting that because I'm an idiot and also had missed that part of the joke, which has given me renewed appreciation for the song.

I missed that part of the joke too, but that may be because I don't think of Don Henley as a hard rock artist.

I actually didn't hear much Don Henley at all in there.

At least- not until I read a YouTube commentary where someone was comparing it to "Dirty Laundry".
And then when I listened to "When I Was Your Age" again, I went-- whaaaat!? ._.
This sounds like... souped-up Don Henley, with a pinch more hard rock, and a big spoonful of AL style.

And there you have it. XD
