It usually becomes (Wide) public knowledge on Wednesday afternoons around 4 est or so. Usually MTV is the first place that has it. I'm sure Billboard subscribers or industry insiders know beforehand.
You have quickly thought up such matchless phrase?

New charts are posted on Thursdays at www.billboard.com

If Al does get a top 10 debut I recommend everyone buy the magazine when it comes out next Monday. It will be a truly historical event.

I'm afraid it doesn't seem to work that way anymore. It's often the case with established artists (like Al) that the debut week is the peak week. It's this darn soundscan system they use now. It's not likely it will go higher than it's debut position, because most of the people who really want it, bought it the first week.

But because Al and TBITB relentlessly tour to promote it, i believe it will eventually go platinum no matter how high it gets on the charts.

That's probably true. But if history tells us anything, it's that Al's albums continue to sell steadily years after their release. Thank heaven!

With a bullet! Now I know what Zappa was talking about on "Fillmore East"!

About when did this start happening? I'm just asking because the jump Dave described is kinda sorta what happened with RWS....and that was just in '99.

I'm surprised that was the case for RWS because I've been noticing this trend with other artists since 1995.
