Going to have to go with SDMCA here. Yoda is a much stronger parody and I've honestly never had any particular attachment to SDMCA.

Everyone who's picking Stop Dragging is doing so with the great benefit of hindsight. Of course that would be the obvious pick today, but in 1983 it would've made a lot more sense to get rid of Ricky.

Thank you, you read my mind. And that is not saying anything bad about Ricky.
What a racket they're makin', Jack, they keep me up at night playin' their electric guitars!!

Ah, good point. I guess Ricky would be the one to go. As long as I Love Rocky Road stays.TMBJon wrote:Everyone who's picking Stop Dragging is doing so with the great benefit of hindsight. But Ricky and Rocky Road were the singles, that's a big part of the decision for me.

Re: Yoda is on Al's Debut album
Yeah, I totally get that. But don't forget that Ricky was recorded nearly a full year after the rest of the debut album. So, from a practical perspective, it would have made a lot of sense that somewhere in that year is when Al would have hypothetically gotten the Kinks' permission and decided to go with Yoda as a single instead. Yes, it's hard to imagine Yoda himself being in the video, but the Ricky video came out great without breaking any copyright laws, so I'm sure Al could've fair-use'd his way to an awesome lead single music video for Yoda too!minnick27 wrote:But Ricky and Rocky Road were the singles, that's a big part of the decision for me.

We should also consider that 'I Love Lucy' was no longer a top tv program at the time. It was just a classic doing re-runs. Empire Strikes Back, however, was very fresh and at the forefront of everyone's minds.

Re: Yoda is on Al's Debut album
does anyone know why the demo version of Yoda was left off the record? listening to the demo it seems like the song would've fit in well on the album, and since it was recorded in 1981 I assume there would have been time to include it on the album. I don't know if this version of Yoda could have replaced any of the tracks that were released as a single, even Ricky. even though it seems especially dated now I have to imagine the song it parodied and I love lucy were still popular enough to warrant making Ricky a single/video. by that logic it seems SDMCA would have to be the song to go, although I probably like Ricky at little less.
taste is only something if it is yours.

I had to go with SDMCA too. And I'm someone who generally likes that song.
