Don't Download This Song vs. TMZ: Which is the better video?

Post by JEDM »

Since a handful of people on this board aren't fond of Bill Plymton's animated videos for Al, I thought it would be interesting to see which music video we all like more.

I've said this elsewhere, I'm a huge fan of Bill Plympton's work in general, just not his videos for Al's songs. That being said, however, I do enjoy the Don't Download This Song video a little bit, whereas I hate the TMZ video.

TMZ is by far the better of the two.

Like most, I'm not a fan of either, but I think I said it when the "TMZ" video was first released--Plympton latched onto the "Exclusive pics of your flabby behind" line and refused to let go for whatever reason. At least DDTS attempts to tell some sort of story.

Guess I'll go with TMZ. It's basically a one-joke video, with a rotten punchline (if you can call it that), but at least it's watchable. For some reason I find DDTS downright unpleasant to watch.

I have to go with TMZ. It's actually in color, there is more motion and kinetic energy to it. and it looked like Plymptons visual designed were sharper, cleaner and more focused from the DDTS era. I also find the "storyline" to TMZ a bit more visually engaging and easier to follow than the DDTS one.

Yeah, DDTS almost feels like an unfinished rough animatic. I know the B&W bits are supposed to be a "dream sequence", but it's just flat-out ugly and not fun to watch.

I read an interview with Bill Plympton somewhere where he stated that TMZ was in color and DDTS wasn't because with TMZ he had more time to actually finish his rough drawings or some such thing.
