NARAS has repealed the Yankovic Exclusionary Rule. Comedy may now be spoken or sung, so there's a chance once more, starting next year or whenever Al gets his next album out.

It's about da** time!

According to this site, the telephone was invented in 1876. Al says in the song that they "...Ain't even paid the phone bill in 300 years." Now, assuming they started charging for a phone service the very year the phone was invented, this isn't possible. The phone had only been out for 120 years in 1996, when the song was released. To make this statement true, Amish Paradise would have to take place in the year 2176 or later.

I'm looking for discussion, not really an answer. Don't just tell me that I have way too much free time on my hands and I should stop taking Weird Al so seriously.

Well I have a question, do Amish even use telephones? Cause if they don't use them then there wouldn't be a bill.

They had the telephone in the video (another weird thing about the song) which sprayed out dust at the tourist. I'd think telephones would be taboo in Amish culture. Apparently, that wasn't a telephone but a dust-spewing fake-telephone trap for those of us that rely on technology in our everyday lives.

But if it hadn't been used in 300 years, then the Amish who were alive in 1996 wouldn't have broken any of their rules.

BTW, this is now the topic for overanalyzing Al songs. I searched and found that we have a topic like this, however, it is about comparing parodies to their originals.

I don't see a problem at all. The fact that the Amish who who lived before the invention of the telephone didn't OWE a telephone bill doesn't change the fact that they weren't PAYING a phone bill. Just like Shakespeare wasn't writing his plays on a computer.

DO the Amish have to wear black all the time? Even though your homies agree you really look good in it?
