Concert in Charlotte last night!

Postby gamergal » Mon Aug 11, 2003 3:10 pm

Hello all! I'm new to the forum, but have been listening to Al for years and years! I finally got to see him in concert last night in Charlotte, NC and must say, I was very impressed. I took my daughter and 3 of her friends as a birthday gift (I've raised her up right, huh? only 12 and a Weird Al fan!). It rained the whole time and we were soaked to the skin, but I think the impending pneumonia will be well worth it. :D

As a first time concert goer, I found that he was every bit as good in concert as he is on the albums. His vocals were incredible and his accordian skills impressive. We were sitting off to the side and I couldn't help but notice that he was singing so hard he was showing the audience with spit! LOL! Since we were all already drenched, it didn't matter. I loved that he came off stage and walked through the audience.

I noticed in another thread people were asking about poodle hats. There were a couple of people who had tied stuffed poodles to visors. I was jealous I didn't think of it. Unfortunately, we were running late and I didn't know if cameras were allowed, so I left mine in the car. I'll know better next time!

Anyway, I look forward to getting to know some fellow fans of Al and think your forum is great! Thanks for reading!

The concert was great, except for the weather. I'm just glad we had at least a roof over our heads. Apparently the Paladium doesn't have a drainage system, so for about 45 minutes water was flowing past our feet. It was like some strange post-modern art or something. I'm just it ended before he came on stage. Of course, then the cold wind came (insert pneumonic cough).

P.S. The tickets say "No Cameras" but it's basically no flash photography. Too many people bring cameras for the Carowinds workers to take away or say to stop.

rained the entire time? 45 minutes? were you guys at the same concert i was? it rained right before the concert and stopped not long before it started. sure the "floor" was wet but it wasn't always "flooded".

concert was awesome, sat in from of steve so we really felt the bass.

BTW, anyone notice Steve smoking on stage right? it was before they started, the initial sound check.

I also sat in front of Steve. You may have seen a camera flashing way too much. That was me :). Show was great, Got lots of pics and got to meet Big Al after the show. Me and a few others were just kinda hanging out at the back gate where the tour buses are, hoping to get a glimpse of Al as he went to his bus. Hoping against all odds that he would come outside the gate and sign autographs. But get this, he actually invited us inside the gate for pictures and to sign autographs. He is a true artist.

Can I post a link? http://www.vasr.net/album1.html
Just a few of the pics I took.

Yeah, Ecto, I have no clue what they're talking about either. It didn't rain the whole time, and the water on the floor wasn't that bad. I believe that it stopped before the concert, and may have started again around the middle of the concert. Anyway, here's my review of the concert:

I got into the Paladium at Carowinds, around 7:10, when the rain was at its hardest. And, am, I ever glad, I mean, WOW, I couldn't have missed that opening act! LOL!! That was the worst something, I have ever seen in my life before. That was terrible to make somebody sit through that. I felt sorry for the people who were actually laughing at them, I'm hoping that whoever did was making fun of them, and didn't actually find them amusing. Anyway, that's already taken too much of this post than that or it or whatever it was, deserves.

Now, onto the concert. Weird Al came out and started with Angry White Boy Polka like he did in Cincinnati, which I was so glad about. I'm sure that the set list is set now, since it was the same concert, which isn't a bad thing. Then, he did, Party At The Leper Colony, which I loved the opening to it. When he said, "Whenever we play at amusement parks, and it rains, I think aout lepers" or something like that. Which, unless you were at Cincinnati, you wouldn't have gotten as well. Since, the concert was delayed by rain at Cincy.

The crowd wasn't very into it at the beginning, but got better near the end. There was a lady in front of me, who looked like she was in her 20's and her boyfriend, were really into the concert as well. If it wasn't for her and him, our section would have mostly have been dead with just me, to try to get excitment up. You could tell Al was trying to get the excitement up too, whenever he went out of his way to go all the way around on One More Minute, and went out into the crowd on I Wanna B Ur Lovr, which unless I'm mistaken he doesn't usually do. And, he also yelled, at the end of I Wanna B Ur Lovr, which, I don't think he usually does either. There were also some girls with poodle hats in the row across from me in the middle section(I was in the 7th row in the left section, Seat 5, had the PoodleHat Baseball Cap on, maybe you saw me), who got the middle section excitement up as well. The most crowd reaction was during The Saga Begins.

The whole concert was awesome! I liked the concert in Cincinnati, because the crowd was into the concert more there! But, it was still very awesome in Charlotte!! But the experience was so much better at Charlotte!!! First, o all people were so much nicer there at Carowinds than at Kings Island, but that was just a little bit of it.

I met this one lady outside of a Paramount's shop there right before the concert, who said she knew Bermuda, I'm still not sure whether she actually did or not. Since, she said she would 'try' to talk to Bermuda and get me backstage, but anyway. She didn't and I didn't, but I wasn't giving up, on getting Al's autograph. I went back near the busses, had to walk through mud, which was more like a swamp, and through some kind of woody place, down some road and finally got to Al's tour busses. Waited there with my cousin, for around 30 minutes to an hour. While, the security guards told us that we shouldn't even be back there, that they couldn't guarantee we'd get Al's autograph that it would be up to him, whether we did or not, which I knew was no problem, since Al will go out of his way for his fans. Also, there were some security guards moving us behind white lines and red trucks which is always fun as well. Finally, one came and brought us to the fence, where Jay was there gave us our rules, told one guy that was out of us twelve, that he couldn't bring his videocamera in for some reason, I've yet to figure out. Anyway, I was the third to last person to get an autograph that day, I was so excited that I couldn't get my name out of who to make it to. Just so excited that I actually got to sit next to Al on the picnic table that he was signing at, All I could get out was "Oh my god, I can't believe I'm actually sitting next to you." To which Al replied, "I can't believe it either, how'd that happen? I think he has a line for everything, he is so awesome! I had him sign one of the flyers I picked up at the Guest Services place. This was by far the best night of my life, with getting his autograph and how nice he was to me! He is such an awesome guy!! This concert experience was great!!!, and while I don't expect to go to any more concerts this leg of the tour, I can't wait until the next leg!

I'm not sure whether I mentioned this in my review or not, but Jim West was at a table beside where Al was signing, and I think he was talking to the two Smells Like Nirvana cheerleaders, but of course nobody was paying attention to that, with Al there!
