Yeah, I'd never heard about "Al Matthews" either, and I'm inclined to believe that was just a joke.

Two things work against this being a joke, imo: he actually named the station in question, and the anecdote wasn't very funny. The "Al Matthews" gig probably doesn't get heard about because the "Weird Al" dj job is obviously much more important to his career trajectory.

Yeah, he's mentioned the Al Matthews gig in interviews before (not saying often, but still), and whenever it's brought up it doesn't really sound like a joke.
